ticking noise from 01 z71

a few weeks or so ago my 01 silverado with a 5.3l started to make a weird ticking noise, it only does it at speeds above 50 or so and i can only here it when passing a wall or concrete barrier on the freeway with the window down. rpm does not seem to change the noise but speed does. has anyone had this problem. i dont think its the motor but worried it could be from the tranny, its got aboyt 125k on it.

Look at the exhaust manifolds, especially on the driver's side, and look for a missing bolt head. The one at the back by the firewall is notorious for snapping off on these trucks.

Also check for missing brake hardware...A loose pad can cause clicking noises.

Re: ticking noise from 01 z71

i got the truck up on the rack today and ran it to about 60mph in the air, i heard the noise and was able to track it to the t-case, i changed the fluid and that seemed to quiet it down but it is still there, would you guys reccomend having the transfer case rebuilt or just buy a new one?

Because your catching it before complete meltdown....Have it rebuilt, These guys build all my manual transmissions & transfer cases.... http://www.standardtransmission.com/transfercases.html

Buying a NEW unit is Very expensive or impossible, Depending if you transfer case is still in production.

Re: ticking noise from 01 z71

Took the t-case out today and to the tranny shop. He tore it apart and says that everything is fine. No loose chain or anything... Now I'm really stumped.
