'97 Burb DIED going down the road-Please help diagnose--Fuel pump?

I am the wife asking this question... it is not the starter, husband towed it home and went to work. He really has no idea what to check when he comes home, could it be anything other than the fuel pump?? What all to check as we can not drive it anywhere to be serviced? I know the fuel pump is inside the Gas tank & it is 3/4 full ! Is this a Hard job to tackle, thank you for all of your Help!! This is a 1997 Suburban, has been running fine until compleletly went dead going down the road-a hill even, and will not start again, all the lights come on, can open & close windows, but can not be started again. Thanks

If the engine will crank but not start:
If he has a fuel pressure gauge, check to see what the pressure is.

See if it has spark.

If it will not crank (the engine does not turn at all when you turn the key) let us know.

Thank you for the compliment, I try to be very detailed, well, he is in the process of changing the fuel pump as just the filter did not help anything. He was not able to get some kind of tester to test pressure, none of the auto stores had them last night (SUnday), now he has the tank down on the ground, which really sucks as then we noticed the previous owner had a whole cut in the floor so we could have avoided all of this extra work. His question now, is how to safely get that round circular thing off the top of the tank without destorying it (what all the lines are hooked into). It does not look easy, he tried to get all the gunk off. We do not have a Chilton book to help us in this matter. Appreciate all the replies.

There is a tool made for turning the ring to get the sending unit out, but most people just use a screwdriver and hammer to turn the ring.

Clean the area well before you try to remove the sending unit.
