dana 60 5 lug conversion

Has anybody done a 5 lug conversion to a dana 60 8 lug rearend? Or does anybody know where I can look to find out how to do it? Any idea on price for a conversion like this? thanks a bunch, doug

Do you want to keep it full floating? I have an article somewhere in one of my 4x4 mags about converting to full floating 5 lug. If you dont want a FF then you have to cut the flanges off and weld on new axle flanges,get axles made,backing plates,brake hardware,etc... I will look for the article and pm you when I find it.

Are you starting with a full floating or a semi floating rear axle? If you are running a semi, you can just have new holes machined into the flange. There are kits available to convert to a 5 lug pattern, or have a machine shop fill/redrill/turn down your hubs on your 60. It can be done, but it is not cheap. Expect to pay a minimum of $600, and that price is somebody doing you a favor. I know it is do-able with the 6 lug pattern, but don't know about the 5 lug pattern

That axle is a semi float axle. The bearing surface is not the axleshaft, but the axle shaft still bears weight of the vehicle. For non HD purposes however, the 9" is a great axle. There are aslo C clip eliminator kits available for the 10 and 12B axles, that might be a cheaper solution rather than swap out stuff.

A 9" flaoter has full floating axles. It's what we run in our race cars. Here's a link to some. You ca normally get a good deal on used ones. Alot of asphalt cars run truck arms too.

Poorboy, a 9" is not a full floater. A full floater has a hub, with bearings that DO NOT touch the axle shaft in any way shape or form, and thus do not carry any weight. Those axles that do have hubs, and have bearings touching the axle shaft, but do not have C-clips are semi floating axles. The 9" has the bearing and race pressed onto the shaft. If the axle breaks between the bearing and the face of the wheel mounting surface, you loose your tire.

You are right. A stock 9" is that way. A floater is a (" that has bolt on hubs and floating axles. It's what Nascar runs,IMCA Mods, most Stret Stock,ect. It's mostly used in circle track but can be put in anything. Do a search for yourself and you'll see what I'm talking about. Here's a link to some 9" flaoter axles.

It might be. But I bet parts would be easier to find and you would have a better gear selection.

It can be done, I've been building custom axles for years, the only problem will be what ratio you want. The 60 can go from 3.54 all the way down to 7.17. If you want anything taller than 3.54, you can look at a D61 which will take you to a 3.08. All it take is a decent checkbook

I guess it's really not that big of a deal. Personally I want the 14 bolt with 6 lug conversion for my blazer.
