5-SPEED transmission swap in a '72 4x4

Hi, I am new to this forum and yet I can see that there is a lot of experience among the members.
Has anyone replaced a 4-speed Muncie with a Tremmic 5-speed w/overdrive, or with any other 5-speed? Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Re: 5-SPEED transmission swap in a '72 4x4

I'm in the midst of replacing the column shifted three-speed in my '67 with a new Tremec five-speed. I'll let you know how it goes as I finish it up.

Not the Tremmac. But,the NV4500 is a common swap. You need either the later NP205 with the round mating surface(front)or a right-hand drop-out NP241 like what was in the last of the Blazers/Jimmys/Suburbans with solid front axles(pre-92).I believe t-case adaptors are made for other cases, but I wouldn`t bother with any other than the two I mentioned.

Re: 5-SPEED transmission swap in a '72 4x4

I spoke with the guys @ NV4500. This seems like a well thoughtout quality product.

Has anyone tried the NV4500 and are you happy with the results?

Thanks for taking the time to answer

One thing I know about that trans is that you can't haul a trailer in 5th gear. It will wear out in 500 mi. Owners manuals for any vehicle with a nv4500 will say it voids the warranty.

Which 5-speed will handle towing?

You shouldn`t tow in O/D with any light truck.

Maybe with a snowmobile trailer................Try it with a Gooseneck full of steers.

Main problem with the NV, is unlike an Auto which knows when to downshift, the guy in the seat doesn't think that way and problems start. Most of the NV problems started because of an engine called a 5.9 Cummins. You have so much torque it is possible to pull hills in OD which a huge load, the engine has so much low end it wouldn't quit, and common sense tells you that a rinky dink pickup tranny in OD behind that engine which has a much larger transmission behind it in Commercial applications is gonna be the thing that will break.

Anyway, I don't think an NV would mind running in OD towing down the fairly flat 4 lane black top...........Its the instances I mentioned above where they flake out.

Re: 5-SPEED transmission swap in a '72 4x4

I am going to swap in a NP542GL transmission from a C60. It has 5 speeds, but 5th is direct. It is pretty much a bolt-in.

What about a 6 speed out of a latemodel F body into a 2wd?

Re: 5-SPEED transmission swap in a '72 4x4

I swapped in a nv4500 in place of a sm465 4 spd in my 4x4. The 81 up 208c case is a direct bolt on.

1969 GMC, doesn't that trans have the bigger input shaft? Or was that just the earlier 2T 5 spds?

Virgil

Mine has the BIG input shaft, well bigger than my SM465's anyway. But I got the tranny complete with clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, bellhousing, and part of the clutch linkage, so it bolts up to the crank just like the stock stuff did. It was originally behind a 427 tall deck which has neutral balance just like the SBC, so i am good as far as that goes. I am going to use a divorced NP201 from an old International behind this beast, which is huge itself. Not too worried about breakage

EDIT: see my sig? thats the new shift pattern...will take a little getting used to.

Re: 5-SPEED transmission swap in a '72 4x4

I`ve gotten around 100,000 miles from NV4500s in two different`K3500s w/6.5TD.I ignored the "no tow in o/d" warning. The NV4500 is hardly a rinky dink trans for a light truck. They can take torque in the 500+ range w/no problems.Anything more than that, you`re on your own with any light truck tranny.
