1954 GMC 1st Series Visor

Hello,

Looking for a sun visor for my 55 1st series with full windshield. I've heard a 53/54 Belaire on will work. Is that true?

Re: 1954 GMC 1st Series Visor

I don't know, but last year at Emmett Idaho swap meet a guy had three, and a potential buyer had a template of his cab/roofline looking for one and none of them fit what he had, so lesson learned is to make sure the one you are buying will fit. Good news is that if the Belair will fit, most BOP will also work, the upper bodies were the same, only lower sheet metal changed.

Great idea on the template as the PDX swap meet is coming up in a few weeks. I'll give that a try.

Re: 1954 GMC 1st Series Visor

I bought a 54 truck a couple years ago with a car-style sun visor.

It had the kickstand in the middle and was adjustable width.

There are two local sources in your (our) area that could probably help. Old Car Parts on SE Powell or Robert at Split Window Restorations.

Most everyone knows I am not a fan of visors but if you feel the need spend the blooming money and get the correct and proper one for your rig. Cheapest and looking right usually don't go together too well.

Re: 1954 GMC 1st Series Visor

Looks like the one on my '54 Chevy. As far as I know, this was a dealer option and was on the truck when I bought it in 1965.

We just bought a 1954 Chevy that came with a visor. We would be interested in selling it but how can we tell if it is the right one? They guy we bought it from said it was but we are new at this and dont want to just assume it is.

I am also looking for a factory style visor for my 55 1st series truck. I would like factory or Fulton style. If there is a good source I too would be interested.

Re: 1954 GMC 1st Series Visor

OK guys, I have been told which means I have not verified it yet. But I will as soon as I can. Now having said that, the 54 passenger car and the 54 trucks use the same visor except for the end mounting. The angle on the windshields are different therefore the different mounting.

Now, someone will dispute this I'm sure and that is OK. Just remember I am still hunting and hope to verify shortly. Good luck with your hunt as well and maybe you can prove me right or wrong before I have a chance to do so.

As I mentioned in a previous post above, I also think these visors were not necessarily a factory option but a dealer install. Clay

Re: 1954 GMC 1st Series Visor

My daughter's '54 came with a visor that she wants to sell. Here is a picture of it. Not sure if I can post a price on this message board so just private message me if you are interested.

Re: 1954 GMC 1st Series Visor

After several days of research I think I can say with some truth of fact that some visors are interchangeable from car to truck. That is however, if you have a visor by GM. It seams that GM did build a visor or someone built it for GM to fit the '54/'55.1 pickup with part #986936 and it was called Outside Metal Sun Visor. This visor was sold and installed by dealers and was not a Regular Production Option (RPO). For those of you that has a copy of a 1954 Accessory Installation Manual check page 135 for info. I don't have one so I'm not sure what is on page 135 but I am told it is installation instructions etc.

http://1954advance-design.com/Docume...klet/Page3.jpg

This is the visor that may be placed on your 53/54 Belair with the installation of different ends to mount to the rain gutters. ADchevys, I think you and I have that visor.

Look at post #4 in the link below. The first picture is the visor car mounts and the 2nd picture is the pickup mount.

http://talk.classicparts.com/showthread.php?t=12083

CoachH, I can't tell from the picture if the end mounts are the same as those of the GM visor.

Now there are vendors with visors. They are GM look alikes with high dollar prices. Also there is Fulton and Fulton look alikes. An example is noted in the below vendors site.

http://klassiccarparts.com/Pages/ExteriorVisors.aspx

Fulton and Fulton look alikes are a 3 piece visor and with a little southern engineering could most likely be made to fit car or truck. Actually, I am sure most visors could be made to fit car or truck. Clay
