Swapped the 235 for a 292, need some tuning info
A 292 from a 67 c20 with 46k original miles was practically given to me so I've done the swap and the motor runs good. I just can't find what the idle rpm, dwell, etc. are to tune it up right.

Dwell is the same as your 235, 32 degrees. Point gap is .019" new, .016" used. Timing set at 4 deg BTDC @ 600 rpm. Plug gap is .035".

Over at stovebolts there is a good tech article on converting a later model HEI to use in earlier sixes if you want to go that route.

Not the best of pictures, but I modified the original cross member that the bell housing sits on and then boxed in the frame. I bought a pair of sbc motor mounts made for my truck, but had to slightly modify them as well. Overall, it was not too hard for this rookie mechanic.

Guys used to really hotrod the 292 and big GMC sixes (300+ cu. in.) I had a buddy with a '66 C10 with a solid running 29 and a 700R4 behind it. That truck ran great and pretty damn strong too.

Do you happen to have any pictures of how the crossmember was modified? I also noticed no fan but it looks like one would fit, are you running an electric up front of the radiator? Thanks |

Re: Swapped the 235 for a 292, need some tuning info
The one on my 48 was done rather crudely when I got it in 1973 but basically they did some cutting and rewelding to get the V8 bellhousing mounts to sit down on it like they would on a 54 or later crossmember.
Gents a bit of reading shows he PULLED the 235 out and INSTALLED a 67 292. Neverdone50 if you want to go HEI there is nothing to modify you just find one out of a 77/88 292 and probably a 75 or later 250. I've got one for my 68 292 out in the shed somewhere where I stashed it after we did an engine swap for a guy in a late 60's pickup and he wanted to keep the points as it was a farm truck. Simply meaning at the time his workers could figure out points but might not be able to figure out an HEI.

Re: Swapped the 235 for a 292, need some tuning info
Here are the pics of the crossmember modified. I just notched it and welded some new plates on top. It fits like a glove and bolts nicely on place. There wasnt enough room for the original fan so I went electric in front of the radiator.

Re: Swapped the 235 for a 292, need some tuning info
Thanks for the pictures Neverdone. I have a crossmember from a 55 but I almost think it would be easier and faster to modify the current crossmember like you did than to remove the original one and replace it.
