Help with adding FiTech EFI.

So I called them up and they were speaking a foreign language. Current setup is a 305 with a Rochester Quadrajet. Research says that that is a 4-barrel carb. This is new to me for carb. So they mentioned part number 30003. I will need a 4 barrel intake manifold which is on there already. Which thing they start going into details about a high pressure fuel pump. Then they asked me if I have a mechanical or electronic fuel pump. I don't know. In the future I want to add an under the bed fuel tank. Then they start going into surge tanks and fuel Regulators. Now I'm just all confused. Then the guy says about buying an inline pump. For right now I just want to get the truck running and upgrade the fuel pump to i guess an electronic fuel pump. And then add under the bed tank in the future as an upgrade. So I added a couple pictures of the engine setup. Maybe someone can tell me what my engine is all about.

Oh yeah. The 305 is not the stock motor. The engine casting number is for 460776.

Re: Help with adding FiTech EFI.

That is correct, you will need an electric fuel pump. You will also need a return line to the fuel tank. It would be easier to relocate the tank at the same time. The rear tanks usually have the ability to accept the return line. I don't know about FiTech but the Holley units are available as a kit with the correct fuel pump and lines.

Re: Help with adding FiTech EFI.

Your current low pressure mechanical pump is located at the middle bottom of your first pic.

While it could supply enough fuel it can't do the high pressure needed for the fuel injection.

What would be cool is if someone would build a retrofit mechanical high pressure fuel pump. It sure would simplify redesigning your fuel system around an electric pump

Re: Help with adding FiTech EFI.

I used this. No return line to tank needed. Costly but worked great.

Going to play devil's advocate here, not trying to be rude... But if you don't have a firm grasp on even the carbureted basics... Fuel injection is going to give you a hard time. Even those self tuning units... Aren't completely.

Yes, this is true.

Get it running ok with the 305 and Q-jet. Tackling an EFI install isn't a novice task. That's a lot of money to spend on an engine that sounds like an unknown, non-runner.
You can have that 305 up and running as-is for a lot less, maybe $100.

Then figure out what you want under the hood, and spend the money when you have a plan.

Re: Help with adding FiTech EFI.

Fitech makes a "command center" which is a self contained tank and high pressure fuel pump that is fed from your mechanical pump.

Yes and a bit less expensive than the edelbrock unit that I posted.
