should i keep original axles?

K im building a 66 4x4 chevy right now and ive got my frame that im putting my body on stripped down to where the drivetrain is all thats left and im wondering what you guys think about the orignaly 60's axles its a danna 44 front and eaton rear they r 3.90 gears do you guys think i should keep them or put in a set of axles off a 77 i have that are dana 44 front and 12 bolt rear with 3.08 gears if i swap axles id probably swap suspension too so what are some pros and cons to both id love some more info on all this. i know the older ones r closed knuckle how will that affect the longevity of em?

No doubt the newer axles are a great choice, the only hard part I see with them is hooking up the steering box to the newer style axles, the links are completly different. I know because I seriously thought about swaping for newer in my 67 GMC project. Also you would need to relocate shock mounts on them at least the rear you will. John

if i swapped in the new axles id probably swap powersteering in too while im at it

Not that easy on that frame, you'll need a kit or have to fab something, or dimple the frame for releaf for the size of the power steering box, do a serch there is alot of info on this site about what you are wanting to do. John

You will for sure have to relocate the rear shock mounts but the steering may work O.K. My front axle is out of a '72 3/4 ton, although I ran the original axles for a few years with some success. The disc brakes alone are worth the effort of the swap and although not the strongest axle around, the 12 bolt will work well if not subject to abuse. I vote in favor of the swap to newer stuff. As far as the power steering, there is a member that sells adapter plates to make the conversion. Do a search and you should find it pretty easy. Good luck, Chris
