4-5-6 Chevy Trucks - 1966 Chevy K20 lwb fleetside build

We have started on another project at the shop. Let the fun begin. The donor cab is a big back window GMC cab with a transplanted 4-5-6 Chevy truck dash.

That's cool- it looks like you completely switched dashes? Motor and tranny will be?

Re: 4-5-6 Chevy Trucks - 1966 Chevy K20 lwb fleetside build

Motor will be a freshened-up factory 283 sbc and a factory rebuilt SM420 4-speed. We will be running the factory T221 divorded transfer case, factory lockout hubs and factory front and rear 3/4 ton 8 lug axles with 4.56:1 ring & pinion.

Here are a few more of our progress the passed few days. It is going to media on Friday, so she will be freshly stripped by this time next week.

The donor cab is from a GMC, so we had to swap in a Chevy dash.

There were a lot of random holes in the frame, that had to welded and top-dressed.

Re: 4-5-6 Chevy Trucks - 1966 Chevy K20 lwb fleetside build

Thanks Jon.

Here are a few photos of our progress last week.

We are going factory on this one, as well. The bed will be southern yellow pine with powder-coated wear strips & hardware & black painted bed wood. It will also have a factory-style seat with factory-correct upholstery patterns, fit & finish.

This one will be two-tone Blue & White with factory black steel wheels and era-correct style tires.

Back from media...a few body panel surprises, but we have the replacements at the blaster. We are going to self-etch & paint roller this week. Also, the majority of the sheet metal is going to the painter this week.

Re: 4-5-6 Chevy Trucks - 1966 Chevy K20 lwb fleetside build

This one is going back in the original GM Color...#538 Dark Blue with #526 Off-White cap & accent. We are also painting the 283 the correct color, as well as, the T221 transfer case.

The overall goal is to completely overhaul using factory parts throughout the drivetrain including original 283, SM420 and T221 completely overhauled, disassembled axles and reset up with all new gaskets, seals and bearings.

We are really focusing on the factory-correct details on this one.

Thanks Jeremy. We have been really busy on the K10, shipping parts and a few other projects we are working on, so this one isn't moving as rapidly. Stay tuned and thanks for following this build.

Re: 4-5-6 Chevy Trucks - 1966 Chevy K20 lwb fleetside build

A few updates on the K20:

Sent exhaust manifolds to Jerry McNeish of Camaro High Performance, for aluminized coating.

Sent factory C20 rear frame-to-cab mounts to Steele Rubber Co, for revulcanizing.

Getting factory-correct "red" paint for T221 divorced transfer case.

Although there are other solutions, we are making every effort to restore this truck to factory-specifications, utilizing good, used, original equipment and NOS parts, in some cases, as well as, refurbishing many of the original parts from the truck.

We are currently prospecting "factory-correct" front and rear "Spiral" shocks, so let me know if anyone has a lead on them.

Stay tuned.

Re: 4-5-6 Chevy Trucks - 1966 Chevy K20 lwb fleetside build

Im with Martin64 we want updates. I am going to start almost the same project in a month or so, but I have a Chevy big window custom cab I am using on my stock 66 k20 frame. I am interested to see what you do with the trans hump on the floor, on mine I am going to install a 3 inch body lift to run some bigger tires so I hope it will clear with the low hump. When I start my project I will take lots of pics and will do a thread on it. Looks good.
