Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

I haven't seen any on their website. Their rear disc brake kits appear to use the internal shoes for the e-brake like GM does on later model vehicles.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

I came across this nice proportioning valve today that might be of interest to you guys doing the 4 wheel disc conversions. It has a built in adjustment knob. They are a good price also. About 1/2 the price of an aftermarket fixed proportioning valve.

http://www.summitracing.com/search/?...60-11179&dds=1

It is available from Jegs as well if you prefer doing business with them instead.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Wilwood shows four different calipers on their web page. Two for the 1" rotors and two for the 1.25" rotors. The difference between them is piston area. Any one know the in's and out's of choosing the correct one? I would think the larger piston area would equal more pressure applied to the rotor. But I'm no expert.

Larger piston is for the front.
Smaller piston is for the rear.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

There have been inquiries as to what the overall cost is for a rear disc conversion using my brackets. So I have put together a listing of the associated conversion costs for all 3 of the rear disc brake conversion brackets that I sell. Most of these prices I found online on Schucks/O'reilly's website. So anyone should be able to buy these parts for these prices.

Astro Rotor with D52 Calipers
  • Brackets $242.00
  • Rotors $67.98
  • Calipers $71.98 (includes core charges)
  • Pads $22.99 (semi-metalic)
  • Hoses $26.98
  • Banjo bolts $6.58
  • Total $438.51 (with front calipers, no e-brake)
  • $124.00 (add for e-brake style calipers)
  • Total $562.51

'93-'97 F-body caliper conversion The sale thread can be found here http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=382633
  • Brackets $112.00
  • Rotors $107.98
  • Calipers $319.98 (includes core charges)
  • Pads $19.99 (semi-metalic
  • Hoses $21.98
  • Banjo bolts $6.58
  • Mounting hardware $15.00 (estimated)
  • Line adapters $5.58
  • Total $609.09

'94-'96 Impala SS caliper brackets The sale thread can be found here http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=339280
  • Brackets $70.00
  • Rotors $107.98
  • Calipers $201.98 (includes core charges)
  • Pads $18.99 (semi-metalic)
  • Hoses $21.98
  • Banjo bolts $6.58
  • Line adapters $5.58
  • Total $433.09

Some additional figures to use for comparison purposes. Larger diameter piston means more pressure applied to the pads.

Caliper Piston diameters
  • D52 with JB5/6 designation 2.937"
  • D52 with JB7 designation 3.156
  • '94-'96 Impala ss 2.130"
  • '93-'97 F-body 1.590"

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

No, you cannot use the Impala SS rotors with these brackets and the D52 calipers. These are designed to be used with the Astro van rotors which are much thicker than the Impala rotors, and will be the same size as your front rotors. Why do you want to use the Impala SS rotors when they are lighter duty and more expensive than the Astro van rotors?

Allready purchased front & rear crossdrilled rotors w/ wilwoods in the front.Had the impala calipers planned for the rear but would much rather use the wilwoods in the rear also.I know the astro rotors are thicker where the pads ride but How thk. are they at the axle compared to the impala ones,I dont have any more back space left w/ the wheels i'm using. Do you know if we can get them cross drilled & zinc plated?

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

The new Astro rotors that I have are .275" thick where they bolt up to the axle flanges. The Impala SS rotors are .245" thick, so only .030 thicker. A used set of Astro rotors that I have here have the stamped steel hat that is about .125" thick. However I don't know if that style is still available. Yes the Astro rotors are available cross drilled and zinc plated.

I have been considering it since there have been a few inquiries about brackets for those rear ends. I need to post up over there and see how many guys are interested and in which style.

CaptainFab, have you seen anyone combine your brake conversion kit
with an underdash pedal kit?

Like from Scott's Hotrods? (http://www.scottshotrods.com/UnderDashPedalAssembly.asp)

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Not to my knowledge.......It wouldn't function any different than having the booster and master on the engine side of the firewall, as long as you have the correct components for a disc/disc system.

There is something close that can work with the D52 calipers as well as any other caliper designed for 1.25" thick rotors like the LS1 Camaro & C4/C5 Vette PBR front calipers. The 65-82 Corvette rear rotors are 11.75x1.25 and use a drum brake parking brake inside the rotors. Only down side is they are 5 on 4-3/4" bolt pattern but they can be drilled for a second 5 on 5 pattern to work on our trucks.

They fit with 15" rally wheels and you can get all the e-brake parts made from stainless steel from the Vette restoration places pretty cheap.

You can get the backing plate parts from a JL-8 optioned 4-wheel disc 69 Camaro application that fit up easier to a straight rear axle vs. the Vette parts designed for their IRS but the parts are pretty pricey. I have been tinkering around with some inexpensive ways of using the parking brake parts with a fabricated backing plate for the standard rear axle but haven't had the time to test it out and I don't have all the e-brake parts to make it functional.

NAPA sells the American made Vette rotors for under $40 too.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

I have seen some newer AWD Astro vans with six lug wheels (the same wheels that came on my 03 Tahoe) so I am assuming they are a 2003 model year or so. Have you looked into using the D52 brackets with these rotors on a 4x4 application?

http://www.napaonline.com/Search/Det...+50014+2014004

They are 1.14" thick and 12" diameter so I don't know if the D52 caliper can handle that for sure. You would think that 1/10th of an inch smaller would be OK.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

I guess I haven't paid much attention to the newer Astros. I'll have to check into those and see what style of parts are used. I do already have something in mind for a 6 lug rear disc, but I'm reluctant as I'm not sure how well they would sell. Thanks for the info....

I will be your guinea pig on the 6-lug rear disc if you want.

My 67 is sitting on a square body 4x4 half ton chassis so it is 6-lug and I have a set of the El Dorado rear calipers.

I was thinking that the 88-98 new body style 4x4 slip on front rotors might work for this. I keep meaning to grab a set from Pull & Save to test out but always run out of time when I am out there. I will look them up on NAPA's site and get some idea of the offset and thickness to see if it is even worth picking up a set to test out.

Yeah I was planning on using the '88-'98 K1500 rotors. I've already got the dimensions on them and the brackets will be this style, just a different spacer. I might see about ordering some spacers cut for these this week.

The rear rotors on my 03 Tahoe might be an option too if your wheels can clear 13" rotors. They have more rotor offset so they might push the caliper out of the wheel far enough to make them work with 15" wheels.

Re: D52 Caliper Rear Disc Brake Brackets

Yeah I've found similar ones from the Savanaha vans. The only problem with putting say a 13" rotor on the back is that you really should run one on the front as big or bigger. That is where it becomes a little more involved and $$. Those Tahoe rotors are really deep.....about 1/2" deeper than the Astro rotors.
