Should I be worried about my new GM crate engine?
I put a new GM SP383 crate engine in my 72 K5 Blazer last year I have about 700 miles on it so I am still breaking it in. I am worried because it still is spitting what I think is oil from the duel tail pipes. I am assuming the rings are not seated yet but shouldn't they be by now? It is running a little rich so maybe its unburned fuel but is it something I should be worrying about? Any suggestions? Thanks PG

It is probably water from condensation & unburned fuel. I wouldn't worry about it but I surely would correct the running rich condition. If it was oil you would get a lot of smoke. The excess fuel can wash oil off the cyl. walls & cause excess wear & oil dilution. Besides it probably uses plenty of fuel running normal mixture, let alone running rich.

If it's black it's definitely soot. It mixes with the condensation and spits out the tailpipe.

It’s likely running rich because you’re idling on the power circuit.
What carb? What’s your timing set at? |

Try to catch what's dripping out in a clean soup can. You can look at it and see that it's probably mostly condensed water.

Take a paper towel and wipe the inside of your exhaust pipe. I'm willing to bet it comes out black and smells like partially-burned gasoline.

i highly recommend an A/F gauge...super easy install and tells alot about the tuning of the carb

PGG,
I know it's early on use, but do you like the power of the GM 383 crate so far. Also if you used headers which ones did you go with. Thanks |

So far the motor has more HP then I really needed and great low end torque. I am still babying it too. |

Re: Should I be worried about my new GM crate engine?
Break it in like you're gonna drive it. If you're just gonna putt around through parking lots, then baby it. If not, get on it a bit more often. If newer plasma-moly rings were used on the pistons, they're dang near seated when they're driven in by the installer. I wouldn't drive around too long on "break in" oil either.
If you're still driving around with the break in oil in it... change the oil and filter and drive it a bit harder. Unless there is some kind of break in procedure you have to follow for warranty from the builder. Does it have a roller cam and lifters in it? SBC's are stout engines that are built to handle a bit of RPM from the factory, as that is where they make their power. Gary

Still worried about the timing. Any progress ?
Hey guys still Worried about that soot in the tail pipe. Years ago the tail pipes use to turn white. Now a days with the gas the way it is the soot will keep you worrying until you do something to change it. Don’t worry be happy man !!! Posted via Mobile Device |
