Gusher at Fillup!

OK, this HAS to be a common problem.

Go to fill up and gas goes everywhere.

It's bad enough that modern nozzles won't stay in the filler neck, but now I'm gushing gas all on the ground!

PO said that he "fixed" the rubber boots. Maybe not tight enough?

Seems that there is one in there that is cracked.

Thoughts on this?

If it seems one is split, and maybe not tight enough, may be time to pull it apart. Fairly safe to say the copper 90 is not factory.
PO fixed it long enough for it not to be his problem anymore.

HAHA yeah.
I never thought that the 90 bend would not be stock.

I would be able to get one off a 75 but the pass side is deep in a brush pile. lol

I just ordered and installed new hoses from LMC but it does not fix the issue. It has to do with the CA gas pump and all that plastic emissions stuff that prevents it from getting in the filler tube deep enough.

Had the same issue with an 86 K20 a few years ago after installing aftermarket plastic tanks. Could be the copper 90 fitting is restricting the flow. Check the vent also, air has to come out somewhere while the fuel is going in.

whats leaking? find the leak and replace if its cracked etc.

If the hoses he used are not gas rated they will leak over time.

Here is what the factory 90 looks like:

I am going through this dilemma with my truck right now. They are not leaking but I want to replace them. The only place I can find them is Classic Industries and they want like $38 a piece for them. That's crazy prices.

On mine the smaller tube which is the return or vent I think is all cracked and worn.
AND the clamps were loose. Tightening them helped but I need to order new stuff and replace.
Its bad enough that the CA nozzles don't fit the filler necks. They don't let the nozzle sit on its own you have to hold it in place!

I've lived with that issue for 20 years!,something wrong with the design? I've replaced the lines from dealer parts oem,still have issue,it has to be vent problem,or at the time my 78 was made gas pumps were slower now they pump really fast,have to have the pump at a certain angle,and slow the pump down,irritating, also I think the pump seal covers the vent hole and can cause the problem. back in 78 the pumps didn't have that big rubber seal on them, live with it man,or go crazy!

Is there a filler neck that has the smaller inlet in it with the little flapper door that we can swap out? Wouldnt that stop the splash back? I seem to find a nozzle here or there at different gas stations that dont splash like the other but they are few and far between

I ordered the correct replacements from LMC Truck. They were $19.95 each which I am happy to pay at this point. Spewing gas at every fillup is not so great!

If I put the pump on full blast and lock it in, there's a big splash at the finale. I tend to pump about 15 gallons, then knock it down to the first step. When it finishes I don't get any splash most of the time, but every so often it still spits out a little bit. It's gotten to the point that I'm ready and waiting with the window washer squeegee every time I fill just in case.

I replaced these on my truck because they were looking worn and cracked. Found a source on ebay for fuel line for marine use and the hoses were about $3. Had to cut to fit of course but the price was right and had enough for both tanks.
Although the OP's photos look like there is in fact a leak somewhere the compression nozzles at the newer fuel pumps always throw gas if not held far enough in and slightly angled. At least be thankful you're in CA and can do it yourself. Here in Oregon they've found that driving thousands of pounds of metal at 65 mph is fine but putting fuel into it is just too dangerous for the common man so only highly trained specialists can pump our gas.

There's your law makers. Rather than risk some gas vapor escaping during fill-up, they mandate complicated nozzles that cause people to wind up burping gas onto the ground instead. I'm sure we will get them in Texas eventually.

Hmm. Probably a market in California (maybe other states) for a complete new filler neck that is designed to work with today's pumps. I'll look into it.

Unfortunately, they have made it to the metro areas. Filling up my truck in Dallas county was a beating. Drive it to work and fill it in Ellis county, easy peasy. You almost had to lay on the ground and contort yourself to get the vapor nozzles to work.
