Is this truck worth the money?

I have a line on a 1968 Stepside here in Alabama. The body is solid (cab corners, etc..) but one rocker panel is bad. It has a fresh rebuilt 327 with a mild cam but it will need a new master cylinder and booster. The old man won't budge off of his $4,100 price tag. I'm uploading some pics to see if everyone thinks it's worth it or not. All opinions are appreciated.

Smile Re: Is this truck worth the money?

Well...based on what we see and know here...
I think that is a pretty fair price for that truck.
Generally it has a lot in its corner...including:
-1968...nice year with that front end
-short box steppers...getting more popular
-327 V-8....great little engine
-Automatic and power steering....nice, noting most of these were probably 3 OTT
-It had a/c installed at one point (dealer?)...might work again
...and it importantly to me...it looks pretty straight and original and does not look like it was beat within an inch of its life, like many trucks.

If it runs well and you like it...you could probably hand $4000 cash and maybe a 6 pack of beer over to him and it would be yours.
I would consider that truck for that price...noting that anything reasonable under $5 these days is worth considering...and that one definitely fits the bill.

My two bits.

Re: Is this truck worth the money?

From the pictures you've posted it looks like it's worth $4100. I've seen a lot worse priced much higher.

The only thing that bothers me is the bondo covered rockers. I'd have concerns about more areas, but a soft flexible magnet will reveal those areas.

Re: Is this truck worth the money?

Quick question....how is the top/center of the cab?
Any signs of rust around the window seal?
...this is an area that scares the hell out of me, ....but I'm not body man.

Thanks, guys, for all the responses. I'm getting pretty tempted to just go ahead and buy it but I'll sleep on it tonight.

Re: Is this truck worth the money?

I'm going to go against the grain of the other responses. This looks like a nice truck, but as others have said, the bondo on the rockers is a concern.

Here is a bigger concern.....You said it has a "freshly rebuilt 327". Where exactly is this engine? Because it ISN'T in the engine bay. That engine is dirty and hasn't been out of the truck in quite some time. I would push him on this and see if he has more history on the rebuild. Receipts would really tell the full story. My feelings are that he may be pulling your leg on that part.

Also, I see that the master cylinder is missing. That would lead me to question the rest of the braking system. Parts are pretty cheap if you're doing that work yourself, but costs will add up if you're going to send it to a shop.

None of this stuff is a deal breaker in my opinion, but it does put his price on the top shelf for what the truck is. Hopefully others will chime in as well, I'm curious to hear more opinions on it.

Re: Is this truck worth the money?

Freshly rebuilt is in the eye of the seller in this case, i believe. Could mean anything from I changed the oil to I actually rebuilt it. Not everyone repaints when rebuilding (I do) but if the seller is an older gent and he doesn't watch Barrett Jackson, then it's probably rebuilt a little. Personally, I wouldn't count the rebuild in the value assessment of the truck - Trust No 1, as they say. If it runs, then I'd grab it before it's too late, I think it's easily worth asking price, with the bondo and with the questionable rebuild status. Looks like a new manifold, and maybe not much more. But maybe it's a full rebuild and they just didn't spruce it up. I'd bet on the former and still buy it. I would want more details on the taking say status, but if that's a show"stopper", pun intended, then there are probably other bigger reasons to not buy it also.

Don't get too excited over it. It isn't outrageously priced, but I wouldn't say it's a steal. Look it over closely there's more bondo than what's pictured...

There ALWAYS is. Just like rust all you are seeing is the tip of the iceberg.

Take a magnet, wrap it in a paper towel as to not damage the existing finish, (whatever it may be) and run it up and down the body, if it has bondo you will .

I paid 5500 for mine, rust free, a southwest truck all her life, but still with a straight six, tott, no ac, however, I do think you have a solid foundation there for the price if the rest of her is rust free or limited rust. Take the plunge, its all about time, dedication, effort and some money soon you will have it to the condition that you want. Enjoy driving her, they are a lot of fun.....

Re: Is this truck worth the money?

Its a nearly 50 year old truck if you're scared of rust you better double your budget. The 2005 duramax I just bought probably needs more rust repair than that thing.
