Need opinion on whether to buy or shy away...

Got an offer to buy a 2001 2500hd with 6.0 LS and 4L80E trans(2wd) its cheap $400. Problem is the drive train has 241K on it and was used as a service truck. The engine is burning oil pretty badly but otherwise seems to run ok once it is hot. It came into my shop because the transmission cooler line was leaking oil and he wanted it repaired and wanted me to look at the engine oil consumption issue. Pretty sure valve stem seals are toast. But, with 241K on the clock this thing could use a complete overhaul.

Would you buy the truck to pull the power plant out and use in a 67 SWB (obviously once its been overhauled)?

If you've got the room, the engine and trans core plus scrap are worth that alone.

What the others said, at $400 it's worth more than double that in scrap and parts.

Buy the truck, take what you want off of it and part out and scrap the rest. You should be able to make back your $400 easily.

Good luck,
Nick

I'm Not sure he was asking worth as much as he was asking opinions on purchasing the drivetrain for use in a 67 truck. That is just how I read it

You sir would be correct. I understand its value, just not sure the 6.0 is the right choice for my 67. Would I be better off to look for a 5.3 for it?

Re: Need opinion on whether to buy or shy away...

High hump or low hump cab? 4L80 is BIG ala TH400. Personally, it's all about the transmission. If it were me, I'd be looking for something with the 6 speed trans behind it. What's worth more, your time or your money?

But for $400 seems like couldn't go wrong. Throw some rings and valve seals in and see what happens. But back to time/money where is the break for you?

4L80e will fit a low hump 67-72 cabs with engine on stock towers and Dirty Dingo slider mounts.

Re: Need opinion on whether to buy or shy away...

Unless you're that concerned about the gas milage get the 6.0/4L80e combo. You've got the most potential for power with the bigger displacement and the toughest trans. The 6spd auto will improve milage mostly around town, once you're cruising on the highway there's no real difference in mileage between the two transmissions.

Sweet! Thanks guys just wanted to make sure that my thoughts on dropping the 6.0 into the 67 weren't misguided! Now to make it work!
