truck is dead no clue why

Well I dont know what happend I went to drive it this morning and it started like it always dose. pulled out of the drive way made it about 200 yards and it started to stumble like I had it in to high of gear and died.
I put my foot to the floor when it was stumbleing at one point and it caught up a little bit. When I pulled back in the drive way my raidior was smokeing. the hoses where bulged out. There is no water in the oil. The only thing I have done to it was put on new valve covers. It back fired once as well.

Yes they do at one point I took the breather off I thought maby it was clogged. but it still barley ran. So when I got home I pulled off the valve covers and put the old ones back on still ran poor.

Radiator smoking and hoses bulged out? Overheating can be caused by several things like fluild level low, thermostat not opening up, water pump worn or rusted out, cap defective or wrong type, clogged radiator or even leaking head gasket. Check the simpler things out first.

As for the truck not wanting to start, there may be some other issue involved along with the the overheating. Wait till it cools off and if it still won't start check for flooding or clogged fuel filters.

Re: truck is dead no clue why

I made sure the fluid was full and the cap is the same one that I have been useing. am going to replace the thermostat today and see if that helps. I am still stumped why changeing valve covers would make it stop running. The originals had 2 pcv holes in them one in each valve cover. The new ones have only one but I dont see why that would make it seem like its chugging and missing.

your timeline makes no sence a brief round trip of about 400 yards??
no engine i know of could overheat to such a degree in such a short time period

r u sure that last time out it was not beat on hard and put away dry?

Re: truck is dead no clue why

Bulging hoses sounds like your rad cap is too high of pressure.

Sounds to me like you have a head gasket leak. Happened to me once on an old tractor we had just had repainted. Picked it up from the painter put it on the trailer and it starts blowing antifreeze out the radiator cap all over the nice red paint. It didn't have time to get very hot either. Maybe ran for 3 mins. Should have replaced it before I guess. Can't expect much out of 55+ year old gaskets.

As far as the time line it warmed up in the drive way. So it was close to temp. I havent seen any water in the oil yet. Do you think that the valve covers didnt let enough pressure out?

Valve covers won't cause a truck to come to a stop or get hot. It's possible a ton of oil got sucked in through the pcv hose but even then it would probably just blow smoke out the rear.

Maybe you bumped the distributor when you were changing the passenger valve cover, advancing the timing and causing the engine to run hot(?).

If the dizzy wasn't bumped, sounds like the thermostat has stuck in the closed position. This would cause the engine to overheat and the pressure would cause the hoses to bulge.

A backfire is a timing issue... you didn't say whether the backfire was out the exhaust or through the carb.
Good luck.
