If if was me, I'd pull the engine. It's something that could be done in a day. I pulled my last engine out of my '68 and it took about 2 hours. You should be able to start early one morning and get it all put back together and running by that evening, if you have the tools.

Does it require any specialty tools?

As long as you have a means to get the engine out (cherry picker) and an engine stand to use while you're working on the engine, you should be in good shape with a socket set, gasket scraper (oil pan gasket) and possibly a seal removal tool for removing the rear main. Good luck, and don't be afraid to ask questions, these guys are awesome at not being jerks like some of the other forums that I frequent.
