opions on combo
Thought I would get opinions on combo before pulling trigger.od
454 in 69 panel Will be 4l80e with 3.73 gear Cam and intake choice Edlebrock performer rpm plus Carb edlebrock also 750 cfm elec. choke Heads: debating on 049's w/2.25/1.88 valves and mild porting or lower end after market aluminum oval port.Cash donations welcomed towards aluminum heads.LOL 2" headers with merge collector and 2.5" exhaust with x crossover and magna flow mufflers Use will be daily driver, cruiser and light towing maybe 4000 lbs max Likes and dislike comments welcomed as are suggestions. More use to building race combo than street combo.

Re: opions on combo
I'm not really clear on what cam you are thinking of. Is it the Performer or the Performer RPM? The Performer RPM is too big for any towing IMO. The Performer is better suited, but it is an old school grind. The 454 in my '66 Suburban has a Comp Cams XE268 and I like it. I have towed with it and it has done just fine but it really should have about a 2000 stall. Of course a stall converter is not ideal for towing. In reality a step smaller cam would be a little better for towing.

Re: opions on combo
I looked at some of comps stuff. I always run combo thru desk top dyno(don't laugh it's normally very close to real world dyno) . It showed 268 and performer rpm to be about dead even give or take few lbs. TQ the thing that really counts.
As stated towing will be limited and mostly dragster on open trailer.Even with 4 wheeler and generator maybe 4000 lbs or Harley in 12' enclosed. Was thinking perfomer rpm maybe touch much, but it does sound good. Unfortunately sound normally cost some power ,as much as I love choppy idle of old school motors.LOL Was thinking maybe throw 4* in advancet to help.Still up in air on cam choice. Thanks for reply

Re: opions on combo
The XE268 does have a nice sounding idle, and the duration is a bit less than the Performer RPM cam.

Re: opions on combo
X's 2 on the 268H Comp Cam. At 600 rpm it has a very nice lope, 110 degree lobe separation and goes right to work at 1000+ rpm. It's a mild cam w/.485 lift in both valves and 218 duration both valves. PN#11-205-3, Grind # CB 268H-10 High Energy. I'm running that cam in a 69 L34 396 w/forged domes and 241 closed chambered heads. I'm running a Weiand 2P-180 aluminum high rise comparable to the Eddy Performer. That intake will out flow the heads and yet has very good street manners with a Quadrajet and 1-3/4 Hedman long tubes. The RPM intakes are a good intake if the rpm is up but the Performer will start pulling from idle. Once you get to 6 or 7K your done anyway or should be. I've been using a 2000 stall that worked great for the street. Nothing wrong with the 049 heads and with those valves and some mild porting they'll be hard to beat. And if you want to really hear that cam and make the most of the BBC sound, go 3" pipes from the collectors back.. "Old School"

Re: opions on combo
This is the cam I was talking about, not the 268H.
http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/c...?csid=395&sb=0 The 268H is a good cam in a 396/402. I ran one back in the mid '80's.
