1959 turn signal cancel

Hi, just took my steering wheel off to access the turn signal switch. It was intermittently giving my problems with my stop lights. Well I found a loose screw inside and I cleaned the mechanical mechanism that operates the switch and lubed it. It seems to be working great now but my question is does a 1959 turn signal have a canceling option or do you have to turn them off after a turn? thanks

Re: 1959 turn signal cancel

My old stock set up canceled. Took a picture of what my old one looked like. It's scrap, so good timing.

Mine at one point would not work, I found the turn signal housing was sliding down the steering shaft and causing this issue. I move the turn signal housing upward and held it in place with a hose clamp, worked fine since.

It was a long time ago, I was unaware that the housing has a screw that secures it the the steering shaft, but I was in a hurry and placed a hose clamp around the steering shaft to hold the turn signal housing up close to the steering wheel.

You can test yours by wrapping you hands around the turn signal housing and seeing if it moves, if its loose, that is an issue.

Re: 1959 turn signal cancel

The turn signal is cancelled by a ring shown in the first picture - item 13, which I believe is shown with the small tab facing the wrong way. The small tab comes around and pushes the small ears where the yellow arrows are on the second picture to allow the spring to return the switch off. The turn signal cup is held in place on the column by a wedge that is tightened from underneath. Location is shown by the red arrow in the second picture.
