whats the best "quality" paint ????

im almost at paint stage and so i just was wanting to get your opinion on whats the best "quality" paint to use. my intentions are to keep this truck for ever so i want a durable and long lasting finish. my old 1984 still retains the original factory paint, although thin in spots. what did the factory use? is that single stage or b c / cc .? i will be driving this truck, but only to work and back. the colors are factory hugger orange / white. so my questions are....
questions...
#1 . clear coat / base coat or single stage ?
#2 . what product to use.. "high quality" ?

i thank you all for taking the time to answer...... dave

Well...kinda works both ways. Single stage is nice if you need to buff out a scratch. A bc/cc system is what all cars are now for a reason. THe clear coat can take a bit of a beating and the base coat will still look nice. So it's really up to you. If you think its going to get scratched a lot, single stage is nice to wetsand and buff scratches out.

Bc/cc is twice as much work because you have twice as many products, and you will have to go around everything at least twice as many times.

See, I don't see a difference here. If you get a scratch in either one that can be sanded and polished out, it's the same. But I tend to get scratches that go all the way through, so then it STILL doesn't matter which it is, because it still wont come out! Touch up would be easier with ss.

Re: whats the best "quality" paint ????

My preference is base clear. Being a solid color, (not metallic), there won't be a big difference in the spraying difficulty, and the base clear will take more steps, but I think it will hold it's gloss longer than a single stage. I don't have the experience that some of these guys do, but I've sprayed several brands and types of clear and I've never seen a clear that lays down as slick or shiney as Dupont G2-7779S. I used it along with Dupont chromapremier basecoat on my '70 and loved it. Also, I've got a friend who is a very experienced custom painter who said the same thing after he tried it. That doesn't mean that Dupont is the best, or even my favorite, but that base/clear is awesome. I know it's hard to tell from a picture, but these are pics of mine in the paint booth, after the clear was dry enough to touch. I sprayed it myself in a friend's booth.

Re: whats the best "quality" paint ????

It's holding up well so far Dave. It's been almost a year and a half now, and there are a few problems, like a couple of small (BB size) blisters and some spots inside the bed that look like rust developing under the paint, but I believe that those were probably my fault for not getting primer on the bare metal quick enough in this humid climate.

Yes, no matter what paint you decide on, make sure you have a solid foundation for it to last.

Epoxy over bare metal is ideal. and then work your way up from there
