Re: Looking at getting a straight axle suburban

If I were to but a newer square body 4X4 Suburban I'd look for a 1991 3/4 ton with a 350 engine, 4L80E transmission & 10.5" 14 bolt. I'd swap the front axle to a Dana 60 & install a 8" lift with some 38.5" Swamper SXs.

by far rust.....make sure the floors arnt sagging.....body mounts arnt missing.....they like to rust from the rear wheels back......the barn doors are less problematic than the tailgate.....they are the cheapest truck to fix in the world.........do you want a hardcore 4x4 or a street driver

Re: Looking at getting a straight axle suburban

Thanks for the info. I think I will start looking for a 91 V20 Suburban with a RL80E 350 and no rust. The rust part should be easy since I live in AZ.

Thanks for the help guys.

Re: Looking at getting a straight axle suburban

Make sure you get the barn doors.
The 91' is by far the best suburban ever made make shure you get a 3/4 ton
4l80e and a front 30 spline 10 bolt and a 9.5 semi floater in the rear.
Good bullet proof axles for the weekend wheeler,i have the same axles and im really hard on my rig and have never broken them yet with 37" tires.

Gas mileage isn't really that bad, parts are cheap and so is insurance and registration.
Here is my 89'(I wish i had a 91')

Re: Looking at getting a straight axle suburban

Looks like I am going to look at a 90 or 91 4x4 suburban, it belongs to my friends neighbor, and he does not have specifics, but the price seems reasonable ($1500) for either year or tonnage. The truck is supposedly an original AZ vehicle. I will check it out out and and let you know how my luck pans out

Well I bought it, it ended up being a 1990 V2500 with the 350, it has 243000 miles, but it runs good. The body it very straight and cancer free (there is some surface rust patina on the roof where the paint and metal have parted company). The truck has the buckets and console in the front and the 2 benchs in back. So far everything on the truck works except the A/C. It also has the barn doors as well. So far I have only seen like 1 or 2 drops of oil under the truck since being parked in my driveway. So I am very happy with it so far.

Well here are a few quick pics, sorry for the crappy quality, the batteries were dead in the camera and I had to use my cell.

Re: Looking at getting a straight axle suburban

Looks like a good deal for $1500. AC is not a hard fix. Probably the compressor needs to be replaced. I'm sure it has 4.10 or 3.73 gears in it, which is good. Cheap to lift, and easy to make look good.
