Diesel suburban question....

I have a friend nearby who works at a conversion facility, selling vehicles to the handicapped.

There's a suburban, with a work truck grille, that has been parked for several years. Apparently, the engine is trashed. He told me that there is a spare diesel engine for it and the entire package can be bought for $1500. Except for the left rear side glass, it looks good. I may go check it out up close and personal for a better picture.

I have no idea of the year, only that it is a '94 and up.

Re: Diesel suburban question....

Just took some pix, but haven't downloaded and resized them for posting. The 'burb is a '94 Cheyenne 3/4-ton, 2WD, 6.5 Turbo/automatic. The rear doors have defog. It has bucket seats, but no console. The grille is the Work Truck variety. There is a bulls-eye on the drivers's side of the windshield and a crack from top to bottom. The left rear window (side glass .....big one) is still in-place, but cracked all over....probably a rock when mowing was done. It has 126K actual miles. The block on this one is history. He has another engine that has a good block, but bad heads. He says the turbo spins freely on the truck. His wife drove it from new, until late '01 or early '02. According to the owner, there were 12 of them that were identical and were supposedly ordered for the Oklahoma highway department. When they arrived, they had cloth seats and chrome bumpers and the State refused them. So, a dealership in Little Rock bought them to sell. He said there's another one in town that has over 300K miles w/o any issues. I'm not a diesel person, aside from the school bus I drive. He does want to sell and I was amazed at the price, considering all that you get for the money. There's no money in it for me. This is just an informational posting.

Re: Diesel suburban question....

If you dont know anything about diesels dont buy one that needs work. If you have money for a reputable shop to fix it, then go ahead. I bought a diesel that needed work and I knew nothing about diesels, nightmare. Just my (now diesel oriented) opinion.

Re: Diesel suburban question....

Dang, that could be a fire chief's truck. Have you priced the rear side window glass? That and the windshield could run near 500 maybe putting you at 2,000 and it hasn't run yet. Hmmm.

Re: Diesel suburban question....

Actually, he only wants $1300 for the whole enchilada....suburban and the spare engine with all the extras that are on it. It isn't for me. I don't want it. Someone could buy it and part it out and easily recoup their investment and then some. But, I'm not into that. No time, no place to disassemble and no place to store pieces.
