4.8 Question

I looked at a 2000 red reg cab short box ,bubble fender 4x2 today. No pics as the owner was getting out at the mall and I asked him if he'd be willing to sell the truck and he said he'd been thinking about it. The truck has a 4.8 with a 5 speed manual and ( i looked at the spid ) 3:73's with G80 (Posi) and it has 145,000 miles on it. He is an older guy and the truck looks well looked after. Has anyone gotten lots of trouble free miles with the 4.8 as I'm not familiar with the LS engines?

Re: 4.8 Question

The 4.8 is basically a shorter stroke version of the 5.3. They dont have quite the power that the 5.3 has, but should hold up as well(or maybe better), due to the shorter stroke & longer rods. CrazyL

Re: 4.8 Question

That powertrain combo is rarer than hens teeth, and the 4.8 is good to go for a half million miles as long as you keep good oil and filters in it. Was it a GMC? What color was it? Do you know if it had crank windows? Sounds like a HT package to me...

Thanks for the response. The truck is a fire engine red Chevy short box bubble fender(stepside)with factory 16 inch alloys. It had A/C but no power windows or locks. The owner says he has receipts that he changed the oil and filter every 3000 miles since he bought it when it was year old and it still has the originalcluth which tells me the truck hasn't been driven hard. The mileage is mostly highway too. I thought it was rare too but its perfect as a daily driver and should get real good gas mileage with the 4.8 and 5 speed.I should have got the serial number and got abreakdown but other than the rear end ratio and posi I really didnt care.

Re: 4.8 Question

Sounds like someone special ordered it or there are a few dealers out there that are still smart. That'll be awesome on gas, 21-22 on the highway and maybe a bit more with a decent tune. The HT was a GMC, but it sounds like this one was optioned exactly the same, down to the crank windows. Great rig for a DD, if you can work out a deal I'd jump on it.

Like I said, I saw him getting out of it at a Mall and just cold approached him. We talked for 15 minutes or so and he has my name and number so I do expect a call when he decides to let the truck go. Now as long as he doesn't think its made of gold, although the 5 speed short step with p/locks or windows is not everyones cup of tea.
