Sheet metal help...

Hello,

Any input on sheet metal work?

This isn't a truck but the rear trunk lip on a 1970 Nova. I am replacing the rear tail panel and once I started to take things apart...the project started to snow ball.

I tried to find a replacement panel but it looks like this piece is only sold as a full trunk for $350+

I was thinking about cutting the lip back about 3" then welding on new metal with a small flange on the end. I think the purpose of the flange is to hold on a rubber gasket that hides this seam under the bumper.

Any suggestions?

Re: Sheet metal help...

the strip should work as long as you get back to solid metal...

Re: Sheet metal help...

Just thought I'd update.

I ended up building my own little flanger for the metal. Bought a cheap vise grip from Harbor Freight, then cut, grind, weld.....

Between the vise grip and sheet metal, I'm in $11 deep on this one.

Scrap piece of metal I had to test my flanger.

Re: Sheet metal help...

If there was a rubber gasket on there it's intent is to seal against the inside of the bumper to help prevent intrusion of exhaust gases into the trunk opening, and passenger compartment shortly thereafter..
