Question 1965 gmc dash info needed!!

hey gang, I just purchased a 65 GMC, and I've been going through the truck the last few days just getting a feel for what all it needs and what's missing, which is a lot of stuff. my biggest head scratcher is the instrument panel, out of everything on this dash the only gauge that works is the oil pressure gauge, the only knob that works is the head switch, as for the rest I have no clue what they are because none of them work. as for the guages i am guessing i have messed up wiring, actually it has to be because the whole dash is just a wiring nightmare. if any one has any information at all to help me get this back in working order I would really appreciate it!!!

The knobs on the left are the original headlight switch and the wiper/washer switch. The switches on the right are not stock. The ignition switch looks like an aftermarket universal ignition switch installed into an original bezel.

Re: 1965 gmc dash info needed!!

Welcome to old trucks. The oil pressure and temp gauges are not stock and the panel looks like it has been hacked on a bit. The panel has a printed circuit piece on the back that you may be able to see by looking under the dash. When I got my 65 nothing worked. I pulled the cluster and took a look under the dash and there was no fixing it. So that truck got a complete rewire. Take some time to see what you have and evaluate the condition of the harness and the cluster. While you are doing it remove all the wires that don't go anywhere and you may find a good bit of those. This will give you an idea of what kinds of things that have been done over the last 50 plus years.

Re: 1965 gmc dash info needed!!

thanks everyone for the responses, i havent had much time to tinker with the truck this week but the weekend is coming up! as far as the guages i think ill try and track down a guage panel that is stock and get rid of the autozone upgrade unit i have now, as far as the knobs and wiring im going to take PGSigns sound advice and try and track all this out, i do know that the horn was rigged up at some point to a doorbell looking button using what appeared to be lamp cord wire... so that will be promptly removed this weekend. thanks again for all the info. ill be sure to update as i go along

Re: 1965 gmc dash info needed!!

Hey gang, sorry it's been a while since I've been on. today I got the chance to get in the truck and really look around under the dash and it's a mess..... random connections EVERYWHERE! I managed to track down one of three horns that are wired into the truck, none function (go figure) and I got that removed along with its giant door bell style button. got a few components traced as well, like a temperature sensor and what I believe to be the windshield wiper motor that has two switches and wired into what I believe is ignition hot wire, also not working I also attempted to pull the gauge cluster out but it, but didn't want to come out more than an inch or so, so I just put it back in place and called it good for now. My next step is to get a wiring diagram and try to identify components via wire color due to the fact that red heavy gauge wire is spliced into just about everything under the dash. Not great deal removed but a small victory...

To remove the gauge cluster you need to disconnect the speedometer cable.

If you know how to weld. Brothers sells the part of the dash that is cut out.
