Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside

I love seeing the work on the cab. Glad it's coming along.
My son in law is looking for a 67-68 hood if you happen across one let me know.
I can't find anything down here.

I couldn't find a 67-68 hood anywhere. I finally broke down and bought a new one from Summit racing. Summit Racing is off Exit 216, and I'm off Exit 221, so it's right up the road.

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside

While replacing the driver's side rocker panel, the driver's door wss giving me trouble. It wouldn't latch properly and nothing was lining up. I tried to remove the latch, but the screws stripped out and i had to drill them out. The more stuff I tried to remove, the more stuff broke. I ended up taking the dir assembly off the 68 cab. With the new door in place, i got everything lined up and welded.

Then I worked my way forward, patching the air box for the vent.

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside

After countless hours of sanding and priming, i painted the roof and back of the cab today. It's metallic charcoal with satin black below the body line. The separating pinstripe is gm light metallic blue. It'll all make more sense once i swap the cab onto the frame. I just wanted to update my build thread.

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside

I bought a bed liner kit and coated the floor of the new cab from the firewall all the way back to where the fuel tank sits under the rear window. I d/a sanded the whole floor with 80 grit and wiped everything down with lacquer thinner. It looks cooler than i thought it would. Supposedly it takes 5 days to fully cure, so I'll be looking for other stuff to do in the mean time.

I am about to do the same on my SonInLaws bed. At Stephens request his dad is getting him a color bed liner kit (Red) for his birthday this month. We covered the rotted floor with 3/16 flat steel and welded it in. What type of gun did you use?
I have been putting together a 5.3 for my Blazer using the new FiTech port Fuel Injection it's pretty cool as you can tune the engine from inside the cab with a controller. It comes with an intake and fuel rails new injectors and wiring harness with the computer too. But you can get it with just the computer and harness so you can use the oem intake and injectors.

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside

The SEM kit comes with everything you need. They have red or black. There's 4 individual quarts of bed liner, one quart of catalyst, a measuring cup and a spray gin on the kit. Instructions tell you how much catalyst to mix and what psi to spray. I used three of the four quarts on mine.

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside

I disconnected everything and pulled the original cab off today. The plan is to clean up and paint the Frame and check for any problems before putting the new cab on. I already found the trans dipstick grommet is torn and leaking, so I'll fix that and look for any other issues.

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside

I put the 67 cab on today after work. I was waiting on a trans dipstick grommet to come in so i could replace it while it was easily accessible.

To install the cab without removing the doghouse, I put jacks and jackstands under the back of the front fenders. I strapped the jig across the front, just above the windshield to keep it from sliding backwards because of the angle it's on.

I got the top rear fender holes to line up with the mount holes on the cab and put two bolts in there to help line everything up as i lowered the cab. I used new polyeurathane body mount bushings and bolted everything together. Now there's room in the garage to work on the bed.

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside

I got my other led headlight in today. I had to trim the back of the headlight bucket for clearance, but i like the look.

I don't have battery power to the lights yet, but I'll post pics of the daytime running lights, low and high beams.

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside

I replaced the battery today, so i got some decent pictures of the new headlights lit up. I haven't hooked up the daytime running lights yet, but the low and high beams are pretty cool. They're very bright! I also started the truck for the first time since i pulled the old cab off.

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside

I got the interior and the shifter installed this past weekend. I even wired up the power bucket seats.

Today, i wanted to see if i could turn a 69-72 fender into a 68 fender. The only difference i can see is the leading edge of the fender around the headlight. If i were a machinist, I'd make left and right end caps, but I'm working with what I've got.

Here's the finished passenger fender. It's going to be flat black, so it doesn't have to be perfect.

Re: Captain America 68 short/fleetside

I got home from work today and filled the badge holes in the new passenger front fender. Then i scuffed the doors, fenders and hood with 400 grit sand paper and sprayed my outline color for the scallops and flames i plan to do on the truck. I'm hoping for decent weather this weekend so i can mask of and stripe out the design and get the flames painted and masked off.

After cutting the tips off the flames and establishing the dominance of the flames over the scallops, I faded the flames as best i could using the light from my cell phone since the sun called it a day.

I"ll do my best to use the search function before asked redundant questions about things that I"m sure have been covered hundreds of times.
Currently, the truck has a 250 inline 6 and supposedly a Muncie 4 speed, set in, but neither are hooked up. MY plan was to run the drivetrain as is, and work on making it a safe and dependable truck before bothering to swap out the drivetrain. However, I know very little about the engine, and even less about the trans. I don't even know if I have all the parts to make it roadworthy. Time will tell.
Now, the bad news. The guy I traded to painted the truck himself, red, white and blue. Doesn't sound too awful until you see what he did to the clearcoat. I kid you not, the guy clearcoated the truck, and then threw glitter all over it. I don't mean put glitter in the clear and sprayed it evenly. He threw it on the truck like he was feeding chickens!!! There's mailbox numbers screwed to the hood, Tiger-print cloth all over the dashboard and doorpanels, and probably a slew of problems I have yet to discover.
Anyways, looking forward to gathering as much info and knowledge as I can.

I masked off the flames so i could paint the scallops black along with the front of the truck and below the body line.
