2wd with torsion bars?

anyone have one? I got in to my shop a 04 GMC 2wd with torsion bars and a steering box. The suspension is identical to the 4 wd suspension [I had a stripped avalanche frame] right next to it that I framed last week and it was a 4wheeler. I have had a ton of these trucks and never seen one with the suspension like this

I dont know of any 2wd trucks that have torsion bars, But 2wd SUVs do.

The Avalanche is SUV based.

Re: 2wd with torsion bars?

I've never had one either. I've owned probably 10 03-05 GMC 1/2 2wd. They are pretty popular for my customers. In fact, as I noticed this one of my old GMC's was at my shop some customers love to visit my shop as it is almost always fun and interesting for people that like cars and trucks. His GMC did not have torsions like all others I'm used to it was coilsprung in the front. I am aware thae the Avalanche is SUV based, It is on the Suburban chassis. The GM parts bools show two types of suspensions for the 2wd. In all from the ones I have rebuilt or parted out I would say around 225 -250 from 99and up, I have been into a few.

Re: 2wd with torsion bars?

Must be a GMC thing. I know a Chevy Silverado C1500 never came with torsion bars.

Re: 2wd with torsion bars?

I would have argued that too before today. Not trying to be a smart a## but why would GM parts direct list the bottom ball joint and the torsion bars for a 2wd if they never made them? like I said before this is not my first rodeo with a chevrolet of GMC truck there is not a part of them I have not had off of the truck in my hand and I have owned a BUNCH of them and there is one thing I have learned about the General is never to be suprised by what they do. Now with that being said I have not owned a Chevrolet c1500 with torsion bars but they do and DID make them. I am not suprised to see it ,cause they most certainly would not do something for one without being able to get it in the other[ there are exceptions to every case] now driveway , did the one you bought have torsion bars or coil springs?

YES it comes in 2wd gmc or chevy trucks it is a heavy duty option. gm felt that the steering box is stonger than the rack and pinion so they come up with heavy duty frame the option code on the SPID in the glove box IS B2E SPRING SPECIAL. the front frame has torsion bars and a sterring gear box versus the lighter duty coil springs and weaker rack and pinion on conventional trucks. it was only a option on x cab and crew cab pick ups.

Re: 2wd with torsion bars?

I have found that only certain years/models had torsion bars in the 2wd, but they are out there...
