I ended up getting another cab with a perfect cowl, but needing some minor floor work.

I also just realized that this post is almost a year old, so obviously you have gotten everything figured out.

It's a shame you had to get rid of the dump bed, I just think it's kind of cool, but the truck with the flat bed looks sweet. You did a great job on it.
It wasn't too bad patching the inner cowl, just alot of measuring and cutting of some steel and welding it in. I don't think we bought one patch panel for it (though we probably should have). I don't blame you for getting a new/different cab at all... Really the better way to go. Looking back I probably should have done the same, but then nothing really would have been original to the truck (aside from the rolling chassis and some other parts).

A dump bed would have been nice, and the plan was to fix it, but it really was too far gone. We think it weighed over a ton from all the steel someone kept welding into it. Beleive it or not, its actually still being used today on some construction sites, they just keep it on the trailer.

I kept the name and serial # tag from the body though, hanging up in the shop.

Re: Project: "Ol' Rusty" 1969 C-30 Dump

Boy I really need to update with some more pictures... Got the right bumper, built a headboard, side board, and tailgate (has hinges and latches like the old stepside tailgates). Picked up a tach dash for it for $40, got that in there. Now I found a tach/air dash for $100 that I'm going to convert to a tach/vac dash. No other real plans other then that.... Put 4,000 miles on it this summer, more then my 2010 Silverado this year!

It's looking good. Nice to see you are driving it and making use of it. The bed looks really nice. I need to get motivated and back to work on my truck.

Thanks for the kind words! Definately enjoyed it alot of the past summer... Drove it ALOT more then my 2010... I get alot of funny looks from people when I tell them I like driving the C10 rather then my new truck, especially since I'm 19.

Ya it's been quite a change since what is used to look like The bed (and the color too) are white kind of makes the truck for me. It took a while to fabricate it from scratch... But I liked building that alot better then I'd like doing a whole bunch of rust/dent repair on a regular besdie

Funny you mention this.... I too had the 5.13 gears in the rearnend. After about a week or two of driving it I just couldn't stand it any longer. Actually posted a want ad on here for a set of 4.11s and bought a whole 3rd member for $200 to my door if I remember right. REAL easy swap on the Eaton... Just a matter of some bolts and muscling it up there. We did it on a lift, but it actually might have been easier to do it on the ground and use a jack to help steady it when your putting it in the housing... Sort of difficult doing it overhead, and definately needed two people. But the difference in driveability was pretty amazing. Gained at least 10 mph difference...

If you were trying to go for better MPG you'd probably be better off buying a 14 bolt and adapting it. Wouldn't be too hard. Just relocate the spring perches and the shock mounts, and then you could get a ton of different ratios... Something in the mid 3 range would be about right IMO

Re: Project: "Ol' Rusty" 1969 C-30 Dump

i'm considering an axle swap front and rear. 73 and up. better discs in the front and 14 bolt rear. KrazyRay listed an HO52 4.10 3rd member yesterday though. i think that might fit.

what hardware is aft of your PTO? mine was a tow truck but there is no bed and just the yoke is there. i would like to make use of it. maybe a winch or dump box? a winch makes more sense for me.
i also found a longhorn bed that i may buy and enlarge the wheelwells. i like the fleetside dualies that i have seen.

I kinda like to keep things stock looking on my trucks, so I went with an HO 4.10 dropout, night and day compared to 5.14. I can cruise at 50 comfortable all day, and 60 isn't much of a problem either. Mine originally had a PTO dump on it, but the PTO unit and cylinder were leaking awful, so I just decided to get rid of them for the moment. Since I'm not going to be working this truck didn't see a real big need for one.

My parts truck had a PTO winch on the back, and I'd say they got their use out of it... They put rolls on the back of the flatbed to help the cable, and to help with hauling things on... A winch in the rear probably wouldn't be the best option if you went to the trouble of converting a longhorn bed though...
