Changing Voltage Regulator.

Okay so I decide to change my original voltage regulator and see things are a little different with the new one. In the pics you can see a little condenser type thing attached to the original regulator. Do I need to replace it and if so what is it called as I can't find one listed anywhere. Also the hold down screws are screwed into rubber grommets which are turning with the screw when i tried to get them out. Could I use a washer and nut when I install the new regulator or did the factory do it with the rubber cause of some ground thing or something else.

Alright a little more studying and I realize the bolts with the grommets hold the plate the regulator attaches to so that is solved but what about the condenser thing, anyone?

Re: Changing Voltage Regulator.

The condenser is a capacitor and at it's age is likely dead. Whether you need one depends on whether the new reg is mechanical or electronic. Mechanical needs the condenser to reduce arcing at contacts to reduce wear. Chances are NAPA will have one, but rumor has it a lot of aftermarket ones are bad when new.

THanks for the response. I have it sorted out now as a buddy knew what to do.

Re: Changing Voltage Regulator.

Greg those rubber grommets are well nuts. I have a few different sizes of those I've gathered through the years. I'm not sure if they would be the right size but well nuts are readily available off of the net and through any fastener supplier. Spae-Naur, Geno/Auveco and others distribute them and you will also likely find them on McMaster-Carr.

Well nuts are also used to hold the cargo light onto the back of the cab.

Thanks Ray. I found that they are called well nuts and actually found some at Walkers Auto Body Supply on Faithful Ave.
