Re: Chevy Six Cylinder Casting Numbers

Nice find.
Now if only we could decode the 2 and 3 letter suffixes at the end of the dress numbers on the distributor pad.

Re: Chevy Six Cylinder Casting Numbers

Greetings

My 1971 C10 (SPID indicates a base engine 250 ci) block has a date code of A 71 (perhaps Jan 7, 1971). The block # is 3994257 which doesn't show up on any of the listed resources. Any idea how I can authenticate this motor #? Oh, it's a Fremont build.

thanks

Stovebolt forum indicates it's more than likely a 250 cubic inch. The 230 and 250 blocks have the same cylinder dimensions but the cranks are different giving the 250 the larger displacement. Only way to make absolutely sure is to dismantle and check.

Re: Chevy Six Cylinder Casting Numbers

If it's the original engine in a '71 model year truck, then its gotta be a 250, since there were no 230s in trucks after '67 model year or earlier.
Also what color is it?

The block is a thread-worn orange.

The engine stamp is F0113TCL which would indicate a Jan 13 assembly date which is consistent with the Jan casting date.

Anyone know if there's a S/N to month build database?

If not corrupted by a later rebuilder, there should be a stamped code on the machined pad just aft of the distributor hole.
For example two codes on 292s I have are:
F0626UH = Flint, MI, June 26th, 292 Manual Transmission. [1967 block]
F0627XAE= Flint, MI, June 27th, [XAE is a mystery] But it's the known original engine, a 292 L6 [1968] in a '68 C/10 Stepside w/SM465.
The upper listed engine I pulled out of a C/20 longbed stepside ex-Forest Service truck in a junkyard in Tucson in 1977. Coincidence they were built a year and a day apart.

Should also mention that my truck was supposedly a Forest service truck before it was transferred to a NM Fire district.

I have that same block casting. I used the number stamped on the engine pad next to the distributor and the LMC truck parts 1967-1972 catalog has it identified as a 1971 or 1972 250ci from a truck.

There is also a date casting on mine that confirms conveyor #2 an 1971.

I would feel better if I could find another source to verify the info.

Doing a web search for "3994257" brings up multiple hits referencing that block # to early 70's chevy/GM trucks.

Should also mention that my truck was supposedly a Forest service truck before it was transferred to a NM Fire district.

Re: Chevy Six Cylinder Casting Numbers

Can someone tell me if I am correct in my decoding

Engine Pad- F0203TA F- Flint / 0203= Feb. 03 / TA= could be either '65 230ci or '66 250ci

Casting Code- 3877178 230ci or 250ci

Date Code- A237 A= January / 23= 23rd / 7= 1967

This engine is a late '66 250ci ???

Re: Chevy Six Cylinder Casting Numbers

Let me add something else to the mix please. I have a 69 c10 step side. the casting code on the block is 3981968 then GM and the number 50 under that. Trying to see if it's the 250CI as well. All original one owner truck (my father in law) so i know its the original engine.

Not sure of the exact dates, but GM stopped using 230s in trucks around '67. [I can be corrected.] But by '69 trucks had either a 250 or a 292, if they had a CS or KS in their VIN.

Re: Chevy Six Cylinder Casting Numbers

It has the CS. Guessing that means 250? KS would be 4x4 with 292?

KS would be any 4x4 with an L6. Whether it was a 250 or 292 depends. 250s came with the standard package. If a buyer wanted a 292 it would be ordered by the dealer and built by GM and L25 292 L6 stated on the SPID.
The 292 L6 sometimes came in 4x4s, but oddly never in K/5s. At least I've never seen one. I guess GM didn't want to have to warranty a Dana 200 [300?] transfer case behind a torque monster. Go figure? Ford never had a problem putting their copy, the 300 ci ''I6'' in Broncos.
I have a project '72 Blazer body I want to put a 292 L6 into. I have the 292-4WD only diagonal crossmember. I have a SM465/T221 from a '68 gmc. Just waiting to win the lottery to get started on the project.

There is a very high probability you have a 250 L6 engine.
But to be sure look on the ''Dress Pad" behind the distributor. There should be numbers and letters stamped there. They will tell you the engine assembly date and any letters can be further decoded.
