Not original any more!

Well, I HAD to do it!! My all original 71 long bed started showing rust under the eyebrow/drip rail over the front windshield and I could see vestiges of rust starting on the doors, etc.. As we all know the original paint jobs on these trucks were done with soft bristled tooth brushes and w/o it costing an arm and a leg to match the "quality" of the original paint, a touch up wasn't really feasible. So what started as a cab do-over, became a complete bed off, trim off repaint. It was cool to see the X's marked on the bottom panels I'm guessing to show this was to get the woodgrain trim. Then inside the fenders, etc., you can see that ol' reliable "17" did the final OK. The painter who has been doing this for 30 years is still surprised at the overall condition. The floor panels and bed are near perfect and NO RUST anywhere. And with the fenders off, what was supposed to happen in a year or so, happened now. I put in the Vintage Air. It was so much easier. The old heater core, squirrel cage fan, etc., were in great shape as well. I'm half sick about the paint, but I couldn't stand to see this truck rust.

Re: Not original any more!

Are you saying the paint was poor quality? You must be talking about White. Yeah, after so many decades, acid rain, and some don't get waxed the white can chalk and thin out. But it still outlasts the white on newer trucks. Ochre poor quality? No way. That has to be the toughest color ever made. It is very high pigment and actually has ochre in it, which is a clay. Have you ever tried stripper on factory paint? All the repaints will curl up and pretty much hose off and you are left with the factory paint hanging tough. You have to cut or scrape it to get the stripped under it.

Too bad the time has come, but oh well, nothing lasts forever. Have you considered just doing the top?

Re: Not original any more!

I can't remember whether we weren't supposed to buy a "Friday" truck or a "Monday" truck. In any case even the ochre paint had numerous runs, was very thing in some places as was the white. I'm guessing it was a bad day for someone, but hey,... it's a truck, and a really neat one at that! I would have loved to just do the top and/or cab, but then the differing paint finishes would have looked bad.

Re: Not original any more!

I understand if repairs were needed in the Ochre areas there was no choice

Curious because of the markings...what was your assembly plant?
