63 full frame build help!!!!

Well I'm new to the posting but have been lurking for months. I just bought a 63 chev and a 61 GMC. The 63 is being built by me fully bagged and a 6.2 cts v engine. I bought the truck already sitting on a 98 1\2 ton frame. Which will not let it lay rockers without sectioning the bottom of frame so the plan is a 2 x4 full frame looking for some ideas for a front cross member the truck is being built on a somewhat budget any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: 63 full frame build help!!!!

Wow! I was right there with you, until you said budget! Doh!
I know others will chime in, but budget wise, I think you'd be better off to section the frame, using new steel where needed, and not make a full 2x4 frame.
Then again, do what makes ya happy!

Re: 63 full frame build help!!!!

The 98 frame is real bulky right where I'd have to z the frame don't mind spending just don't wanna have 3000 in a front x member

Re: 63 full frame build help!!!!

Seems like using the 63 stock chassis with Porterbuilt front and rear would be much much easier BUT I also fully understand the budget is a big factor. If you werent so far I have a 63 shortbed rolling frame and could make you a HECK of a deal

Pancake the crossmember. The 60-62 is a pain to lay low with the X frame.

Re: 63 full frame build help!!!!

That's why I always discourage trying to use the '88 and up frames as well as the '73-'87 frames. They just don't fit right, without a lot of work. IMO the '61 won't help you that much. What I would suggest is trying to find a '63-'72 frame. But before you sink another penny into that project, be sure you know what the laws are in your province regarding switching frames on a truck. Here in Idaho, you need titles for both as well as bills of sales for them. Otherwise your vehicle is subject to being confiscated and likely crushed.

Re: 63 full frame build help!!!!

here is a recent one how US Customs treat vehicles that are not up to snuff. the one scene sort of reminds of what a pit bull would be doing trying to rip a tire apart.

Re: 63 full frame build help!!!!

Your right about the 98 frame someone must've had it laying around. As for the laws. As long as the donor was not a total loss then it goes through a regular safety check If you use a total loss then it has to go through a structural inspection. In my own experience with back halves and bags the ministry of transport is looking for full lock to lock steer with no air and no dragging( haha ya right). Luckily I know of a few good shops that will treat you right as long as its not some hack job. I'm gonna build the frame from the fire wall back (with some extra hanging out ). Then worrie about the front at a later date

Here in Alberta almost anything goes. don't need the titles from either of the trucks. not even original serial # is required, but it does make it a little easier. No serial # no problem. just stop off at the R.C.M.P have one made up, then take it to an approved shop/mechanic. that can do an government safety inspection. then stop off at an registries with the inspection, get a license plate, throw it on your bumper. Insure it. AND BAM!! YOU CRUISING ALBERTA .That easy. That's I love Hot Rodding in Alberta

that sounds pretty simple. sure your not stretching it a little?
you would never get it registered here in B.C.. wouldn't pass inspection even if you moved here with it or sold it to someone here

Re: 63 full frame build help!!!!

they are a little more stringent here. you would have to have it inspected for road worthyness and they are sticky on modified frames. there is just 1 insurance company ICBC and they are also combined with the Prov. MVO. their way or the highway. mthey may ask for things like weld certificates on a welded frame.
I bought a 65 suburban that Came out of washington, all clear with registration for a wheel drive. only thing wrong was that i had an 84 4 x4 frame under it. guy couldn't get it registered here . It wouldn't pass inspection. I bought it for the body.
ron
in years past there use to be quite a few stolen cars that past between the 2 provinces. so there is also a good look at registration

Find some Sh!t in a field, nail it together, buy a VIN#, have provincial safety inspection, register it. Drive it. It is that easy.

lowlife4life that is one cool looking build table. looks like its floating.

Doors! yes I happen to have some extra doors. Are you in need? Yours don't look to bad.

Are the rear tires placed where there going to be? if so what is the wheelbase going to be? looks super short in the picture.

Re: 63 full frame build help!!!!

Got a great deal on the I beam at the local scrap yard. 2 20 ft long. Enough for a nice heavy car trailer when I'm done the truck. My drivers door I've already repaired ( corners on and out and got rid of the handles also. My passengers door the po decided to grind the old paint and half the metal off. Haven't scraped the idea of keeping it but if I could find some nice ones or one then I'd be better off I think. As for the wheelbase I'm not sure exactly thinking a touch longer than Swb. If so only a few inches and it probably looks short cause they are 24" wheels
