How many gallons of fuel does a stock tank hold?

My tank is stock in the cab on my truck. When I filled it up the other day, it had exactly 1/8 and when the pump stopped it went almost 1/4 past the full mark. It took 12.36 gallons. I always thought these trucks had about 21 gallons. If that is the case I had about 8 gallons left at the 1/8 mark

Re: How many gallons of fuel does a stock tank hold?

I think they are considered 17 gal. tanks but you can fit as you guys have said 19 gals or so. Pretty sure Blazer and Suburban tanks are 21 gal. Be interesting to see what the Burb Blazer owners out there manage to squeeze in their tanks...

Whoops! Sorry I missed you Blazer/burb request in my first reply. The manual states:

C,K10 Panel, Suburban, Blazer 20.5
C,K20 Panel, Suburban, Blazer 23.5

Re: How many gallons of fuel does a stock tank hold?

The tank in my '70 is stock, but the sender has been replaced by the PO (from LMC) and my gauge will be on the empty line and I have approximately 4 gallons left. I can run about 50-55 miles after empty, and I get between 14-15 mpg. I think it holds 20 gallons. I have run about 300 miles (on a full tank) and then filled it up (to the top of the fill tube) and it took 19.87 gallons, so I'd say 20.2 is correct. Do these tanks have a baffle in them or something? When filling it up and the pump kicks off, I can hear a gurgling sound coming from the filler neck. If I wait a minute or two, I can squeeze another gallon or two in it. Sorry for the long ramble...

Re: How many gallons of fuel does a stock tank hold?

Most I have put in mine was just over 16gallons, I always figure it was a 16 gallon tank, with about 2 gallons fitting in the plumbing (one tick mark or 1/8th always seemed to be just over 2 gallons of gas).....good to know I have an extra gallon or two I didn't know about.

Re: How many gallons of fuel does a stock tank hold?

I'm really starting to think 16 max. It would take 7/8 to get to the full mark and it's about 1/4 past so that's 9/8 total and it held 12.36 in addition to what was in there. It doesn't add up I'll check a service manual to see if it lists capacities.

Re: How many gallons of fuel does a stock tank hold?

All the books say aprox 21 gallons, and I put 21.75 gallons in my first truck once. This truck I have put 21 even in it before. My GMC was the same...20-ish at once.
There seems to have been a 17 gallon tank that was installed in a lot of trucks, but up untill now I had only heard if it in 67 and 68 trucks.

Maybe a former owner installed the smaller tank in my truck. I'll try to take measurements the next time I'm at the junkyards to compare. Thanks for the responses!

Yup -- it's been a long time, but I used to run it empty (I also have saddle tanks) and I know it took about 21 gallons or so.

Re: How many gallons of fuel does a stock tank hold?

I wonder if my tank is the smaller 17 gal too. I do remember the PO saying he used a lot parts from a 68 parts truck. Hmmm....

Re: How many gallons of fuel does a stock tank hold?

My 1970 250 cyl, 3 speed manual would hold right around 20 gallons as mentioned previously and I know it was the factory tank.

Re: How many gallons of fuel does a stock tank hold?

My owners manual says 20.2 U.S. gallons . That's for a C,K10. Now a C20,30 is listed as holding 21 gallons.

Re: How many gallons of fuel does a stock tank hold?

Thanks see ten. Anybody else's gauge reading like mine?. I'm paranoid about running out of gas but it sounds like there's alot more in there at the 1/8 mark than I thought. My other problem is my speedo gear is reading about 10mph faster so the odometer goes around quicker making it look like I drove more miles!.

Maybe centsless or somebody with a tank already removed, would be willing to fill one up with water and let us all know the amount! This would be a simple test that we could add to the FAQ forum for everybody to refer to

Re: How many gallons of fuel does a stock tank hold?

I was always under the impression that the in cab tank was 17.5 gal. Most I have put in my 70 long bed is about 16, but I always fill up before I get to far below 1/4. I pulled the tank to paint the cab so I should be able to get a hard number here in a week or two when I get her back up and running... If I ever get the wiring finished.

Re: How many gallons of fuel does a stock tank hold?

Both of the tanks I've had--one in the '67 and one in the '69--are the 20.x gal tank.
