Re: 84 c10 stepside

Then i sprayed it with House of kolor KS11 primer sealer for a couple coats, with sanding in between. this stuff dosnt plug up the paper like epoxy primer does so you can sand it dry with 320 grit-jeff

Re: 84 c10 stepside

Thank youBarrington nh thats not too far away. ive been on the road with the truck the past couple weeks{finally} still tryn to de-hack some things but all n all its goin good. the truck has stock gears, but i kinda like that. i know from doin my camaro back in the day, when you switch m out to 373 or 411 you get off the line quicker, but it kills you on the top end. im lookin for more of a cruiser that runs cool but will still get out of its own way-jeff

Re: 84 c10 stepside

While i was sandn/cleanin/sprayn, my buddy victor re did the 84 rearend i found on craigslist. He set it up for a spring under axle conversion. put in new brakes. took a saturday to get it in. when i took the old springs off one fell into pieces when i took the bolts out didnt look broken till i took it out.not sure what was difference between the 2 rearends but i had to have the drive shaft shortened and balanced/new universals got new u bolts and didnt like them the stock ones were beefier/still good. removed the rubber snubbers for clearence any lower and id have to notch the frame i dont think id put too much weight in the back. got up on the bed and jumped around and it werent bottom n out. i hooked up the old fence post taillight/plate mount on the rear of the frame too drive it to my buddys shop it was a cool drifter for a day.-jeff

Re: 84 c10 stepside

Kool build! I am working on sanding the multiple layers of paint and primer off mine. Man laquer paint is a pita to get off!! I am also remembering why I never became a body guy and stuck to making them fast.. Haha

Keep us posted on progress!!

Re: 84 c10 stepside

ya, laquer makes it more difficult. quicker sometimes to strip it with a chemical paint stripper. brush it on/ let it sit/ scrape it off. {fumes /messy} then sand with the da or palm sander W/80 grit a wire brush wheel works on places too.unless you can have it media blasted thats the best way.im always too cheap for that and end up grinding for weeks.

Re: 84 c10 stepside

Yeah pretty much where im at. dont wanna spend the money on stripper, so I have been using 50 grit on a 3'' angle grinder and doing it little by little. Got the roof about 80% done, then hit it with a da and 80 grit to get the last layer off, then I put some filler primer on. Next will be blocking it out for days and getting it smooth..

Re: 84 c10 stepside

The next thing i did was move the gas tank from the drivers door to in between the frame rails in the rear. got the kit from lmc had to sawzall the exhaust off/remove the spare tire holder/make mounts for the tank/wire/plumb it up the straps were too short by a couple inches that made the bolts too short too. i ended up using a couple pieces of threaded rod+nylock nuts/washers and made bolts long enough to reach.

Re: 84 c10 stepside

in between gettin that stuff done i was also getting the oak bed wood and finishing it/drillin it. i used honey oil to stain it/seal it i decided it looked like an entertainment center laminate. {too lite.} so i went over that with minwax dark walnut then i put on some clear over that. thats when i slid the bed back on the frame. i had to pre fit it see where the braces go gets heavy doin it by yourself. after i got it on there i put the wood in /fenders n steps on. lots of bolts would have been easier off the truck for sure at least the bed werent nailed down yet and i could still slide it back n forth.those are the bed bolts lmc sent me compared to the stock ones{WTF}. i ended up using 6 inchx1/2 inch carriage bolts and hockey pucks to nail the bed down/get it to sit right.

Re: 84 c10 stepside

Bout that time,i worked on puttin all the new bolts in had to enlist my sons help defiantly takes someone holdin the carriage bolts down from the top while someones underneath puttin the nuts and washers on. due to my sons short attention span/lack of interest, i figured out if i put the dolly i was usin when i pounded out all the dents on top of the bolts, it would hold m down enough so i could get the nuts/washers on there.i had ordered a new set of wheels thru summit. i had to special order them from centerline they took forever and then i got a note from summit they were gonna take alot longer, and they couldnt say when they would be around. that fell through, so i figured out what i could use that they had in stock for the price of the centerlines. i ended up goin with the summit racing fast 5s i was able to get new rims tires lug nuts valve stems/two new wheel adapters for the same price. i was tryn to not use the adapters but i would have had to special order 5 on 5 bolt pattern, unless i got steel wheels. i was contemplating that but ended up goin with the polished aluminum wheels/ adapters w/ the right back spacing for the rears im not a fan of big hoops so i stayed with the 15 inch wheels 15x10 in the rear/15x7 in the front. i was goin back n forth with my buddy about the bolt pattern. i was goin with the 4.75 bp i knew the adapters were . he thought you were sposed to measure from center to center on the lugs come to find out they want you to measure from the center of one to the outside edge of the other. i ended up ordering the right ones, but there was doubt there for a minute. while i waited for them to come in i dealt with the front suspension they had torched the springs to lower the truck i ended up replacing them with 2 1/2 drop spindles and stock springs i ended up replacing the brake rotors/ bearings one of the rotors had a crack in it.{figures}alot of work to get the suspension right and to not be hacked. the truck was a little lower at the end but not much of a difference in height. just done right.

Re: 84 c10 stepside

That finally brings me to where the truck is today. had to do some things like drill for the flush mount gas cap in the bed/put he fender braces in. new led tail lights, but this is how it sits now. nice to be putt n it again. gonna come back apart for paint.{when the weather is s****y enough} gonna do some things to the interior till then. gonna replace the bench seat w/buckets and a console.gonna pull the door panels off and paint them/replace some trim. gonna paint some things/door jambs/probably put in a headliner in it. thats the next phase. got a couple offers to buy the truck. i guess people like it in the flat black attire. i m not lookin to sell it.hopefully the old lady dont hear about it.i got too much time/money/blood sweat n tears in it. gonna drive this one a while.-jeff
