That reminds me, I need to go find my little 380. I can't remember which pocket I left it in.

No sir. I like to think of it as a career change. I’m a jack of all trades, master of none kind of guy. Whatever I get into one thing is for sure... I will not be an employer again. I’m tired of every aspect of having employees. For most people payday is a good thing, and they don’t come quick enough. Not for me. Just the opposite. Reporting to the IRS & TWC, making sure all 941, 940 and TWC payments are on time, general HR management, and the pressure to make enough profits to cover payroll every week. No more of that, thank you! If I need help I’ll get a subcontractor. I’ve got all kinds of avenues to explore, but I hope to use my creative side in whatever I end up doing next. I’ve really enjoyed remodeling our kitchen and bathrooms over the past months. I may do more of that kind of work. One thing is for sure down here in Texas, there is no shortage of work. And you’re not “out of line”! Feel free to ask me anything you’d like! I ain’t nobody!

I resemble that statement.

I got lucky. I caught my son in law not looking and put it all on his desk.

You sound similar to myself, l started on my own 19 years ago as a one man remodeler. Probably 70% of my work is bathrooms and kitchens. I like to do about any type of work which the customers seem to like since they don’t have 5 different subs coming in their home and I feel things progress faster. Give it a shot

I started out painting and roofing.

There is definitely a market for craftsmen.

Good move. But it never worked for me. I'd just get so many questions that I'd finally say just give it back to me. I'll do it.

So there ARE more of us

5 years ago I had enough. I downsized from a 40k payroll per week (and all the headaches to a 2k a week payroll. It is still not perfect but I figure it lets me take on the jobs I want to instead of anything that comes in the door just to pay the bills. I figure if I can't pull that much in every week I got no business in business. If i still had my hearing it would only be me, but out of necessity I still have 2 employee's on to help out with that.

In April it will be 15 years I've been flying solo. I eat when I'm hungry and stop work when it's at a good point late in the day. Employees require you operate on a structured schedule that they are always messing up.

I had a crew of about 30 guys give or take. If the phone rang I'd get the chills. If the phone's ringing there must be something wrong. And I wasn't wrong. Something always was.
