Calms me down just thinking about it!
It's strange how all of this reduces stress. My wife says "you care about the truck more than me". I said "yep" it doesn't talk back, but it will bite occasionally.

Nice looking project. Stick to your plan or it will never end. Come to think about it, does it ever end.

Re: My $900 '66 Suburban project begins...

I hope it never ends!

After this one, it's a toss up between a '49 1-ton Panel, and '62 SWB Gasser with a Caddy 472 (already got the motor, and the truck is essentially free (it needs about everything) whenever I trailer it out of it's berry patch.

I'd keep the panel pretty stock. I have ideas about putting a 302 GMC in it, if the guy will part with a core for a reasonable price. He already wants too much for the truck.

All day dreaming aside, I'm going to adjust my valves today. Not as glamourous as a caddy swap, but every bit as fun.

One project at a time!

Here is what I tow 1972 27' Streamline. Here is a 54-55 Panel in Ashland, OR. that could be had for next to nothing. It actually is in very nice shape. Needs a frame.

Nice Airstream! Nice Panel, too.

In other news, it would appear the 292 has hydraulic lifters, thereby negating my valve adjustment plans...

Good thing, I guess. So instead, I heated my shifter up and bent it to a more comfortable location--essentially just put more bend in the bottom, and a new bend up near the knob. Nice lazy "s" shape now. Looks cool, stays out of the way (sort of) and reminds me of an old International I once owned.

Re: My $900 '66 Suburban project begins...

I bought a used 700r4 pulled from a rotted car. The guy had saved the motor and tranny from the car before he junked it. I got it for $50 and it's been working great for about two months so far. Not to mention that a tranny swap is quite easy.

Good Luck with the Burb, we sure love ours.

As for the overdrive, I have a 700r that I hope to swap in this winter. I bought it last spring but couldn't stop driving long enough to install it.

Check out this guy's website, http://webpages.charter.net/danp/ nice Sub and he's got a matching vintage trailer. Pretty cool. Myself, I want a gasser to pull behind ours. My oldest son has talked me into it, 9yrs old and a Willy's fanatic. I like short wide gasser idea, that would be different.

Oh man! I love that Burb! Definitely the style I'm shooting for, though I'm really digging the blue color. There's a guy who posts here from Astoria, Oregon, and his LWB is just the right shade...

How did you lower yours? I'm assuming dropped spindles and springs?

Saw a 700R4 for $100 on cranklist yesterday. Little unsure how to proceed with the swap though.

Scored some Slummit drop spindles today. Uninstalled, used, $100.

Re: My $900 '66 Suburban project begins...

Bumping this old thread to see if anyone has seen my old 'Burb?

She's a '66, obviously. And I sold her to a young guy from Salem, Oregon who put a 283 in it and a tired T-5. It had some brown primer spots, too.

I randomly saw it on a trailer one day. Either heading east on I-84, or North on I-5. Don't recall exactly.

I'd love to buy her back, or at least see where she wound up!

Anybody know anything?

Long shot, I know....
