Re: 700r4 gear indicator question

I've looked and looked for one with no luck. I don't understand why they aren't more readily available. Does everyone really have a tilt column?

I don't know about everyone, but the first thing I do to a vehicle is swap in a tilt column if it doesn't have one already.

Re: 700r4 gear indicator question

I think that's a unicorn part. As far as I can tell there is nothing made that will fit a stock non-tilt column. Places like Ididit and Flaming River make them for their own products, but the diameter is different.

I finally gave up looking and spent some time adjusting my linkage (and slightly modding the steering column) so that it will at least fairly accurately line up in Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive. I can still use 1st gear but the pointer runs past the end of the indicator. No biggie, I don't manually select gears as a rule anyway.

Re: 700r4 gear indicator question

I found one once and bought it for my '72 that I had. I have no idea where I got it from, but they do exist.

It would seem everyone has a tilt column. I cant find a non tilt anywhere.

Im betting a piece of acrylic or plexigass could be made into an indicator fairly easily

Re: 700r4 gear indicator question

Is it possible that the non-tilt indicator area simply isn't big enough for a 4-speed indicator, and that's reason no one has made one?

It depends whether the four-speed "packs more gears into the range" or "extends the range by one gear". It might be a little of both, and it runs out of room.

Anyone have a four-speed trans and a 3-speed indicator to speak to where first winds up landing on the indicator?

Re: 700r4 gear indicator question

You may be right. It could be that it is to big for the actual lens. I intend to make one and instead of "park", itll be P R N O D 2 1 to give me a little more space on there. Maybe that will work

Re: 700r4 gear indicator question

I have one on my to do list, and I thought the ones listed in LMC would fit. I will keep watching to see if anyone finds a source, or I may try to mark one on a piece of lexan or polycarbonate?

What if you sand and polish an original and apply a decal on it, I'm sure a sign shop could make one with clear film?

Re: 700r4 gear indicator question

I just did some grinding to my column and now it will fetch the 1st gear. It does however move past the original first gear and somewhat past the housing if i remember. I will try to take a pic. No bigge for me as I only look down to see if I am in reverse or park.

You pretty much nailed it, Dave. Since the 700R4 has one extra gear, the 'sweep' of the indicator extends beyond the physical limit of a stock housing and lens. I can get my truck into first gear, but the indicator sits beyond the end of the housing by about the width of the pointer. I'm pretty sure that's why we don't see replacement housings and lenses for four speed transmissions. If there was a market for it (unlikely) someone could make a bigger (wider) housing and lens, but you would need to drill new holes in the steering column to mount it.

If you use Lokar or similar style linkage you can adjust the shift lever throw and the sweep of the indicator pointer and dial it in with the aftermarket OD lens. I had a 700R4 in my old 72 and did this.

Guess i could leave it alone and know the pointer wont line up. How much do i need to manually shift to first gear anyway?

I changed my steering column to a Van unit, I can send you my old one if you like..... just pay for the postage..... pm me with your address and I'll send it out
Monday.
Ben Smith

One thing I've noticed with my Van tilt column, is the internal detent plate makes
it difficult to shift all the way to first (700R4 has a low first gear and add that to my 3:73
years makes for a very quick up shift) I used threaded rod ends, r/h and l/h threads
to make a turnbuckle shift rod so I could adjust the indicator.

Here's my standard column od indicator....
I used the "Ididit" column indicator that comes with adhesive on it
but I used a different approach to attach it to the column
I took the stock indicator lens and traced the shape of it
onto a piece of scrap Lexan, then cut it out with a scroll saw.
I took the Lexan and attached it to the indicator housing, I then
took a small dab of clear RTV and affixed it to the Lexan.
Looks pretty good, but not perfect. I think the indicator from
Ididit cost about $30. Since there aren't any alternative pieces
This fit the bill.
