dana 60 front question

hello everyone,
when I went to the JY today, I discovered a front dana 60 axle laying in the bed of an F150 under a pile of NP203's and automatic trannies. the weird thing was, the axle had drive flanges (no locking hubs, for fulltime 4x). there was also a dana 60 rear next to it that had "78 Dodge W200" written on the diff cover, but nothing written on the d60 front. could that be what this axle is out of? oh yeah, it had a passenger side diff...so its either GM or Dodge.
thanks

1st question is how much for it??

and you are right to assume chevy or dodge..

If you got the build numbers off of it I could tell you what it came out of.

or measure the perches then measure yours. I'm not sure but I think dodge was a little wider on the perches.
Someone else may correct me..

Dana 60s started showing up in W200s around 1975 and going to the king pin style in 78 or 79, Dodge dana 60s have a spring pad width of 32-1/2" and GMs version was 32". I have heard of guys using the Chevy D60 in Dodges without any modifications but since the Chevy had 3" wide springs and Dodge had 2-1/2" wide you may have to grind the passenger side pad to clear a GM spring.

Also Chevy D60s are 69" from wheel mounting surface to wheel mounting surface and most Dodge axles were 67" with a few being 69". If it is a 78 it will probably have 4.10s and if it is a disc brake unit it would be worth grabbing if the price was right.

Lets try this----- the chevys have a spring width of 31.5 and the dodges are 32. These are the center/center measurement

I would get the numbers off the axle and run them here http://www.pirate4x4.com/tech/billav...ont/index.html . Just about all the dana 60 info you could ever want and more .

thanks guys, I will try to get to the BOM numbers tomorrow if it isn't buried too bad. I'll also snap a pic or two. it was a disc brake axle, no closed knuckles. how do i tell the kingpin version apart from the balljoint version?

IF its an older dodge axel it should have external drive flanges with 8 bolts that hold the flang on. If its a chevy axel it should have internal drive flangs with a crome cap on the outside. I have a dodge version in my 77 chevy and its a piece of cake to put in just change the steering arm to a chevy arm and bolt it in.

here is a pic of the Dodge external drive flange from the above pirate4x4 article, the axle I found is the same so I'm guessing it is a Dodge axle. good to know that it will bolt right in, i just wonder how much this JY will want. most likely too much but I can always hope for the best.

my dad seems to think that the guy is hoarding the axle by hiding it under the pile of Np203's and auto trannies. that doesnt make too much sense to me, I mean why leave it out in the open when he has like 3 huge storage buildings plus a shop and an office. also, its piled with a rear D60 from the (i'm guessing) same W200, and a 6 lug axle of some sort (couldnt see the diff, it was buried). if he knew what it could be worth, he'd just take it inside or something. but what do i know...hopefully i will go there tomorrow and find out what he wants for it, snap a few pics.

Congrats, great score!!!!! Isn't it great when you make a great find - I'm always on the lookout for a Dana 60 - the bargains are out there if you wait long enough (and have a little luck).

yeah, this was total dumb luck...went to the jy and spotted a row of cars & trucks that hadn't been there the last time I visited. this was half buried in a drift of NP203's, chevy fullsize van interior pieces, and dozens of empty Busch 40's in the back of a beat up old F150. i was almost scared to ask him how much he wanted for it...he said $200 and i almost peed myself, but then I got him down to $150 (rotors rusted out, unknown gears, etc). he wrote on the receipt: "3/4 ton 4 by front axle, $150"

now I just want to figure out what its from...decoding the BOM tells me its from a D-600, which is a 2 ton 2wd truck (Dodge equivalent to a Chevy C/60)...which makes no sense. Also, the D-600's I have seen have a massive 5 or 6 lug bolt pattern on the wheels, not the conventional light duty 8 lug pattern. Also, the axle is SRW, and it has drive flanges which meant the truck had a NP203 transfer...I just think it is from the same truck as the rear dana 60 that was with this, which was marked "78 Dodge W200." however, the BOM would be different if that were the case...oh well.

it's not a D61, I dont think Dodge used them until the late 80's, and I've never heard of a D61 with drive flanges. also, it has "60F" cast into the pumpkin. but thanks for watchin my back

one of the vendors on pirate4x4 has informed me that the selectro hubs would cost me $149 for a set, shipped to my door. this sounds pretty good, I think I would rather buy new than used. woohoo!

are the drive flanges 30 or 35 spline? I'm looking for a set of 35 spline drive flanges.

sorry, the drive flanges are 30 spline. all factory stub shafts were 30, iirc. also, I *think* Warn makes a 35 spline drive flange, but I'm not sure.
