Newest parts acquisition & a Question

Hey guys,
Yesterday I snagged myself a new transmission. I got a free divorced NP201 transfer case a while back, so I thought I should look for a 2wd tranny to go with it, since my SM465 required a total rebuild.

Anyway, its a New Process 542 GL. Five speed with direct in fifth. No Overdrive, I know, but it does add that much needed gear between 3rd and 4th on the SM465, so it should 'drive' much better. It also has an even lower granny 1st gear (7.33).

It was from an '84 Chevy C60 school bus chassis. Originally had a tall deck 427 in front of it. Has a humongous bolt on ujoint flange on the rear, I think its a 1410 series. It also doesn't directly bolt to the engine. The Bellhousing has an SAE pattern, but there is a thin steel adapter to the Chevy pattern. It has a monster 13" clutch that is heavy as crap. I think it will be a nice bulletproof addition to my truck, eventually that is. I know, world's slowest build up.

My question is, can I use the flywheel that came with this tranny behind, say, my 350? Its from a TD427. I know I couldn't use one from behind a 454 due to the different balance, but what about the TD big block?

Hmmm....good question.It seems to me you would at least need a compatable harmonic balancer.I guess that knob does look just like the other New Process knobs.I wasn`t sure if the Clarks had that pattern or not.

Why don't you make things easy and go get the 427 TD? Then you have the best of both worlds.

The thing about these tranny isn't the flywheel to use, it's the clutch. The input on these is ginormous. Can't use a stock flywheel, that is why they have those adaptor plates on there. A 427 is internally balanced, so in theory you could use the 427 flywheel. They used SBC in those applications too, so you could always snag one of those. I wanted to go with a tranny like this, just with 5th being an overdrive. But, trying to find one and get a clutch/flywheel would be tough and expensive. If you could swap out the input from a 465, or could get one, that would be nice...

When I got it, I got everything...the adapter plate, bellhousing, clutch, pressure plate, flywheel, shifter, u joint yoke, and even a piece of the driveshaft.

I'd also been looking for an O/D one, and they sure arent very common. I also needed a 2wd tranny since I am going divorced t-case, and this fit the bill nicely.

EDIT: i probably would have gotten the 427, but the whole reason I got this was...the guy bought a school bus just for the 427 to put in his pickup. It was a pretty sweet 73-87 era K20, and of course I forgot to take pics of it. He had cut up the rest of the school bus and needed the tranny gone.

The O/D ones are pretty tuff to find, but there are alot of different ones. J/Y here has alot of these trucks, but since I dont' know what numbers to look for, I don't know what I'm looking at. Bout the only thing that I know is it has to be a single speed rear. Would love to have one in my 89, getting tired of auto's.

I got lucky on this one. Been searching for a tranny for a while, and found this one on ebay. The auction ended with no bids, and it was pretty close to my house. I got it for $100 less than the auction was for, guy wanted it gone.

I need to measure the yoke size. If its 1410, that would be pretty sweet.
