1968K20 truck

So, there is the above truck. Original 4X4 and all... Anyway, there are no lock-outs for the front axle. Has anyone ever seen this before on a truck that old?
It's the old style axle with the "internal" knuckles/balls at the ends of the axle...
It might be for sale soon, and I want to find out about this before hand...

original 327, M465, T-221, D44 front, Eaton ?? rear. they think the old split rims are behind the barn, but it was foggy, rained for the last day and 1/2, and getting dark... not that the split rims can be used, but it would be cool just because...

The cab looks solid, but the long step bed has had a rough life. the tailgate was taken off when it was new and put in storage until about a month ago!!!!

The only pic I have is on my camera & i don't have my cable on this computer... maybe monday...

Re: 1968K20 truck

my 68 k-10 has closed knuckle with lockouts...someone could have changed your lockouts. Do they have the shiny disk covering the end of the axle? All that is inside is a gear and a spring.

Re: 1968K20 truck

You could push the truck down my way and let me take care of it3/4 ton might be a D60 rear and should have a HD44 in the front. It should have drum brakes all the way around like your 69 K10.Dont see many longstep 4x4s.I guess Im not alone in Indiana anymore...

Re: 1968K20 truck

My '68 K20 has the lockout hubs and closed knukle. I agree with msgross, I think someone changed those. I have never heard of them being non-lockout back that far.

Re: 1968K20 truck

I'd never heard of "full time" front axle on this old of a truck either... It had "dog dishes" on the wheels, so i couldn't look at the ends of the axles. If it does go 4-sale, i'll pop them off to be sure...

For what it's worth, it is a retired fire truck that carried a 300 gallon water tank. I keep hearing stories about how the truck was unstoppable. so i know it had a hard life, but that doesn't bother me, that's what these beauties were built for!

Re: 1968K20 truck

even with someone changing lockout for full-time I can't see hubcaps being able to cover it up. Be interested in seeing pics of this monster...

Re: 1968K20 truck

Lock out hubs were factory option. I bought a new 67 and a new 69 both off the dealer's lot and both without locking hubs but with a smooth button end cap on the hub.

Re: 1968K20 truck

The majority of those trucks purchased without lockout hubs were later converted, either by dealers or by the owners. That's where a lot of those Warn and other non-Spicer lockout hubs come from.

Re: 1968K20 truck

So here is a pic of the truck. It's a rotten pic taken by my cell phone... It looks like the wheel covers are f@rd. It suprises me they are deep enough to cover the ends of the front axle...
The yellow spots on the paint are reflections of light.
It's a crappy pic, first time i've uploaded one from my phone. maybe the g/f will let me borrow her camera next time and i'll get decent pics of it.

The floor of the bed currently is rusted out steel plate. My guess is that it used to be wood? Anyone know...?

Re: 1968K20 truck

how much are they asking for it? I think longsteps are cool on 4WD's. I would imagine wood but one of our SME's will chime in on the bed.

Re: 1968K20 truck

I believe that all the step side beds ( 67-72 ) had wood floors. Never seen one with steel unles the wood rotted away and steel was put in.

Re: 1968K20 truck

That's a nice truck. It would probably get better gas milage if you take off the hubcaps!

They said they had an offer on Evil-bay for $9K, but the guy backed out. I can't get them to give me an actual price that they are asking for it... but it's a weird situation (retired fire service truck). I think the offer realized the truck was not pristene, and it wasn't worth $9K. If I am fortunate enough to get it, I'll let you know how much it hurt the wallet...

im pretty sure every step side bed chevy ever made had wood floors, not just our vintage trucks.

looks like a nice find, but $9k? Next time you're there ask for a hit off the crack pipe.

Re: 1968K20 truck

The bed is wood and the rear end is a Dana 60 if it is a GMC. I figure it is worth about $3-4k.

It's a full on Chevrolet, no GMC...

That's about the price range I had in my head for the truck, just wish they agreed...
