Cold Weather

Maybe it's because I'm an old thin guy. But cold weather really gets to me. I get cold very easily.

My wife on the other hand won't let me turn on the heater. She likes the house cold. I turn the heat on...She turns it off. The cold doesn't bother her at all. And I freeze my rear end off. She opened the windows when it was 26 degrees outside.

My friend came over in a t shirt and shorts when it was in the 30's. I told him he was crazy and he said it didn't bother him. I was wearing long johns, a leather fur lined jacket and a beanie and I was still cold.

Is it just me?

Maybe, maybe it's them. But poor circulation will cause a person to feel cold more than others. And people with a higher fat content will handle the cold better. But wearing shorts and a t-shirt when it's in the 30s is stupid if you ask me. It's not like they'd be hot in long pants and a long sleeve shirt. Back when people had more sense you never saw it. It's some kind of monkey see monkey do thing I just don't get. Especially when you see someone wearing a jacket but have on shorts and flip-flops. "Hello? if you need a jacket it's a good sign it's time to put on a pair of pants, socks, and shoes". What if your car breaks down and strands you? We aren't always hopping from home to car from car to a building.

I have worked outside all my life 12 months a year. I could always take the cold better than most. But these days, between not working every day outside and getting older, I get cold much easier and don't like it. But that said, When it first hits the 50s after fall I feel cold. When it's in the 50s during winter it's a nice day. We become acclimated. But with all this up and down temps that's harder to do. For me during winter, no matter what the temp, as long as it's sunny and not windy I am fine. Then the limit is when my fingers get cold. Damp cold or windy sucks. I am more comfortable on a sunny calm 25* day than a 45* dark dank damp day. Gives me the chills just thinking about it. Also, being busy moving about is one thing. I can handle just standing around in the cold.

Well my buddy in the shorts and t shirt has a pretty high fat content if you know what I mean. He's a big boy. And I don't mean tall.

I used to not get cold much, but these days it seems like I can't get warm.

Years ago we spent a couple winters in a thin walled trailer with a wood stove at temperatures down to forty below. The space was fairly small so we could get it really warm with the wood stove. I would wear a long john shirt and shorts most of the time, and put on some overalls and long sleeve shirt and a vest when we went out for any length of time. But often when the sun was shining and no wind I would go out to split wood without adding any more clothes. Heck, you could sunbathe out there beside the trailer lots of days. This was at about ten thousand feet above sea level and the air was thin and the sun was warm even when the thermometer read way below freezing. Thirty degrees was almost like summertime

Up here, the sun doesn't get very high and we're only about 3500 feet. Our house is on a timbered north slope and doesn't get much sun at all for about four months. Not to mention I'm almost 40 years older now.

Some people are like that. Once the sun is out I typically just wear a shirt in no/low wind situations when working. Others I work with freak out when it is below 70*.

If you try you can improve your resistance to the cold, but you have to force your body to acclimate.

I took my son to Bishop Ca around Thanksgiving, and after Christmas for a little fun. I wore flip flops most days, and shorts. Day time highs were 45-50 degrees.

My dad is near 80, and usually wears a flannel if it is cool since he works in the shade. Or laying on concrete playing with his hot rods.

Which is why I want a russian woman. So when its 60* out it is still bikini weather.

Every once in a great while I will go outside and then suddenly stop and look all around and wonder "what's wrong?" Something has to be terrible wrong because it just doesn't feel right!

Then I realize that the wind isn't blowing

It never lasts long, though

A old friend moved up there to a smaller town, and he says the same thing. Lots of wind, and cold quite often. I forgot the name as I have never been there, but i was told it was in a mountain valley or pretty close to one.

He was telling us he heats his house in summer sometimes since the wind makes the whole place cold..

One of my sons wore shorts year round -- with a jacket in winter, but still no long pants. I never could figure that out. My wife is always colder than I am, but I do feel it more as I'm getting older. Cooler temps don't bother me much if I am active, especially if it's not windy. I can't take much wind. Couple days ago I took one of our dogs on an early morning trail walk while it was 18* out. No wind so no problem.

My wife is young but has a circulation issue. She is cold in most scenarios. I am a heat pump. I tend to compensate by wearing less than her. Seems like the other way around could be more fun...

Ever since I got old, well mostly since I have been put on heart and BP meds, II get cold very easily in my upper arms and chest area. Everything else is still somewhat my old yankee self. I am the guy in undershirt and flannel shirts in running shorts and sandals, today is in the upper 50s). I am sure being a tropical and southern climate the last 35 years has influenced my bodily resistance to cold also too.

As I have aged and my arteries have closed up I tend to run a good bit cooler than I once did. I don't mind summer heat near as much as I used to. I can't stand the cold though. I never liked it but now, I really don't like it. For years now the wife has been hot flashin, fanning the covers and all. Keeps me busy dragging the cover back over me when she has thrown it off. Only to cover right back up herself 3 minutes later. I've gotten to where I sleep with one hand wrapped up in the covers so if she goes to throwing the cover I can limit my "exposure". I kid you not. The other night she rolled over to my back side and I woke up super hot. My legs were like on fire. It was HER! She was tucked up close and I was burning up. Well that was it for me. I got up at 2:30 and stayed up the rest of the night. She ought to be well past that hot flashing stage but at least they aren't as bad as they used to be. She has worked with a guy for over 24 years that does not own long pants. He wears his shorts with a jacket and turns the office heat way up to stay comfortable himself while the "normal" people suffer with stifling heat. Ridiculous I tell ya. Inconsiderate fool. Where was I? Oh have a great day ya'll.

Maybe something is off with your thyroid? I had mine cut out and my
Thyroid levels are a bit high so I am always hot. I wear tank tops and shorts all year round. Even in the chilly winter months when it gets down to the 70’s.

Yeah, the dreaded cold of Hawaii!

Myself, I'm less able to tolerate the cold. The wife is still in that hot stage (could be from being overweight, and I ain't calling out any number!), and I could stand to lose 20 pounds myself. I gained it after I retired.

Believe it or not 70’s are cold to us. The body gets accustomed to the warm weather and it’s chilly. I knew colder weather, I grew up in the North East.

The wind off the ocean can be cold.

About 30 years ago we took a long winter vacation from CO to the TX gulf coast. We camped out on Padre Island and even though it was 65* I was wearing my winter coat! And shorts and barefoot

Inland a few miles it would be warm.

I'm not usually cold . But my wife with no body fat is cold when it's in the 60s. But during the change of season from summer to winter. I will put a coat on when it's in the 40s. Today I was working outside in 36° weather with just a long sleeve thermal . Most nights I have my feet out from under the sheet and she'll have two blankets and socks on

I have the same situation. My wife likes it cold - it's usually between 64 and 66 degrees in my house. And I hate the cold passionately.

When I was in Iraq it got up to 135 degrees. We're wearing body armor, carrying weapons and ammunition, patrolling on foot. Everyone was complaining about how incredibly hot it was. I just said, "At least I'm not cold."

Either some of you are wired backwards, or I am. OK, it's probably me.

I always preferred the house on the cool side (though that's changing a bit as I get older) and my wife, who is usually too cold, would like it warmer.
I swear it can be 60 & sunny outside and there's smoke coming from our stovepipe.

I sleep better if the bedroom is cool. My wife tolerates it but lordy does she pile on the blankets.

I hate being cold as well. I'm happy when it's in the 80s outside. Even 90's is fine as long as the humidity isn't oppressive.

Anything below 60 and I don't function well. My wife believes she has to have the bedroom at 64* to sleep. She's fine with the house being at 72. So we have one of those fancy room units because I'm not paying to drop the whole house that low when it's 95* outside. It just has a little 6" high vent assembly going to a window.

I wear a hoodie to work from September-ish through April-ish. It's rarely warm enough in the office for me to take it off.

The older I get, the less tolerant I'm to cold weather. This winter hasn't been too bad until now. Tonight is going down to minus 9. There's no reason for that! Why do I live where the air hurts my face!!!!

My sister moved from Western NY to Stevens Point, WI last summer. She can't believe how much colder is there than even NY.

My dad had heart bypass surgery 10 years ago and has been on blood thinners ever since. He stays cold. I can usually take the cold weather pretty good, but I got the flu 3 years ago just about this time of year and the cold seems to sink in quicker than it used to since I had it. It's supposed to be 23 degrees here in south Arkansas tonight. Probably gonna be a chili or soup night tonight.
