'57 Porterbuilt 20" tires

I know this topic has been beaten to death, but the majority of threads I see or for later trucks. If there is a thread I missed, feel free to point me in that direction.

I'm setting up my '57 Chevy truck with the full Porterbuilt suspensioth I'll be using Centerline Smoothies that are being built as a 2 piece wheel instead of their usual 1 piece rim so I can get custom backspacing.

There aren't a lot of options for the front because of possible interference with the suspension. I was told a 245/40/20 on the front. Quite a few different options on Tire Rack, although they are all car tires with no light truck options.

I was also told 285/40/20 for the rear. There are really no good options in that size and nothing that matches up with a front. Has anyone used the Porterbuilt suspension on a trifive truck, and if you did what tire size did you go with? I haven't heard what they can do with backspacing, and I'm doing the tires and wheels first so I can mock it up with the bed to set the width of the 9" I'm having built.

Any suggestions on tires? Backspacing ideas?

Id probably go with a 245/35 front. 285/40 should give you nice meat in the rear.
Toyo makes front/rears those sizes.
And I wouldn't worry too much about one being car and one truck as long as you stick with a good brand tire.

Thanks, I'll take a look. I'm not worried about the car vs. truck tires. I agree that as long as the are well made, it shouldn't make a difference on this project. My Jeep and Rover are a different story since they are beat up offroad.

I should have looked closer to you comment. The 285/40 is the size I can't find any options for. Checked on Toyo.com and Tire Rack only shows a couple, at least on their mobile site. They do show one in a 22". The do have a few in 245/20 or 245/22 which are almost 1.5" smaller.

Any other suggestions for a 29" tall tire for a 20"x9.5" wheel?

I ran a 295 40 20 on 55 we built several years ago. It's a good looking and well proportioned tire.

295-40-20 = 29.2" tall & will work fine on a 9.5" wheel.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.

Re: '57 Porterbuilt 20" tires

Thanks, quite a few choices for that. Any recommendations for a front size that won't interfere with the Porterbuilt front on a 8.5" rim?

Based on a 295-40-20 rear? I would do 245-40-20's & go from there.
