Question Auto to standard trans swap

I have the chance at complete 4speed set up out of an 86 1/2 ton 4x4. I was wondering if it would be a major job to swap out the 3speed auto and put the 4speed in my 78 Blazer?

It's a lot of work, but it can be done. I bet someone will pop up on here that has done this before.

Anyone?

Forgot to mention that the Blazer has a 305 and the truck has a 5.7 (350) if that makes any difference

Re: Auto to standard trans swap

One of the biggest things to check is, see if the 86 has a 1 piece rear main seal or not. The 1 piece seal's flywheel is different than the one for a 2 piece seal like your 78 should have. The 86 should also have a hydraulic clutch setup where the 78 would have a push rod and z bar setup. The motor size difference will not affect anything...

Re: Auto to standard trans swap

Found out a bit more about the 4speed. It is hooked up to a 305 and the truck was an auto to begin with. I'm going out to have a look at it on Sunday and have a better look at what all will be involved in a swap. Wish me luck LOL
