1951 1/2 ton rear mount fuel tank

Howdy everyone, new to the forum. I just got a 1951 GMC half ton. Pretty decent shape, at least its a good solid starting point. I just installed a limited slip rear end out of a 99 explorer with rear disk brakes. Now I want to move the fuel tank out back. I keep finding tanks where you have to cut a filler hole through the floor of the bed. Seems counter intuitive to me....its a truck bed, stuff goes in it. Does anyone have suggestions for a tank with a side filler? I saw a pick of one that has the filler come out the side of the bed right next to the brake light. That's sort of what I've got in mind. What are all of you using?

47 48 truck tank would work too. Goes through the bed side behind the cab on the passenger side, underneath the bed wood

Go though the build threads. Several guys have put rear mounted gas tanks in their trucks in them an have good photos showing the install. Some adapt an oem tank and some use a custom tank.

Here is one Iowaboynca showed in his build http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...=663622&page=4

That "should" take you to page 4 of the build. Scroll down. He used a Tanks Inc. custom tank on his.

Re: 1951 1/2 ton rear mount fuel tank

Hey 51Hammer, welcome to the site!

Thanks mr48chev for the reference! Back to the question at hand, I got the idea from Advanced Design and DWCSR's builds. See links below.

To be honest, DWCSR did this first and we just follow. He's going through to the fender. I know there's a couple of other builds that went up through the fender but for the life of me I can remember who. try a search on "camaro" or "mustang" tank. That should help.

Re: 1951 1/2 ton rear mount fuel tank

I pulled a few pics from my build to show how I did mine. I had a custom tank, but any tank with the fill going to the side can use this same type of set up.

Mine was set up to have it go thru the drivers fender. I use a Hagen gas fill kit that I welded to the fender. Then I use exhaust tubing for the bends, and gas approved rubbers to tie it all together.

Pic 1 the tank
Pic 2 Hagen kit installed in fender
Pic 3 Back side of fender show part of the system.
Pic 4 The second piece that tied the fender elbow and tank together.

Hope this may give you some ideal to get yours done...Jim

I like it real well, been using it for 13 yrs. Fitment was good, I aligned it from the backside of fender, so that the top of the gas fill, door closed, layed good on the fender, mark it and cut the hole, layed unit on top of the fender and welded it in place. Hope that's clear, if not let me know...Jim

my neighbor is a jeep guy, he gave me a gas tank out of a 85 jeep (cj i think) looks pretty much like that, same kinda mounting where its like a skid guard that bolts upward. looks like i should be able to fit it under my 51 pretty easily as i kinda mocked it up. if/when i ever get it in there im sure ill make a thread about it. though it might be cheaper to just buy a aftermarket tank with the way that jeep parts prices are
