Don't beat yourself up too much, and don't over think it. If you get an original driver that runs and stops, without too much rust, the rest can be done as you go. You'll learn a lot, and get up to speed before you know it. Just don't make the mistake I've seen too many new guys that are overly analytical and scared to pull the trigger... They often times let a very good truck slip away to someone else

Thanks Mister-B. I have a habit of over researching everything. It's a blessing and a curse. I'm trying to put it in check with this particular purchase. "Analysis paralysis" as they say. I'll make it happen soon, though, and start a "check out my truck!" thread.

Re: Going to look at this Ochre beauty tomorrow. Thoughts?

these trucks are very hard to stay away from after you have owned one i have had at least one for 30+ years
sorry it didn't work out you will find another rust is the biggest thing to stay away from imo check the cab supports, cowl above the w/s etc.
good luck on the search and take your time looking and find the rite one

Re: Going to look at this Ochre beauty tomorrow. Thoughts?

You guys missed my update on page 2. No truck for me. The guy was too tickled by the eBay auction response to give in and sell it early. I went there Wednesday night, at he ended it early last night. Someone must have either offered him a figure he couldn't refuse locally or one if the bidders offered a figure to end it.

Re: Going to look at this Ochre beauty tomorrow. Thoughts?

Thought I'd update this that I got a truck! Didn't end up with a 67-72 so I won't start a new thread in this section. I found this '64 listed in Washington and drove 280 miles to get it and drove it all the way home. Pretty excited. I'll post a more detailed thread in the 60-66 section once I take more pics. Thanks again to everyone who gave input on my threads and helped me be more comfortable buying a truck.

That's one of the nicest 60-66 I've seen.

Re: Going to look at this Ochre beauty tomorrow. Thoughts?

I was hoping you'd see this Mister-B. thanks for the kind words. It really is a looker. It has the original rebuilt 230 I6, three on the tree, manual brakes and steering. But it does have vintage air! Blows ice cold. Here's a few more pics while I'm at it...

Here's the interior. This pic was taken by the PO a couple years back but it is the same now as then

thank you!

It was pretty cool driving it home I got about 15 honks and thumbs up by people passing me. It didn't really occur to me that I may get any reactions from other drivers until it started happening. With 4:10 gear three speed I camped out behind the slow semi trucks the whole way home and let everyone else zip by in the fast lane.

Man, congratulations. That really is a beauty. I like the red and all the chrome

You'll want to add power brakes ASAP. You don't need to do disc. I'd hate to see some jerk pull out in front of you and you can't stop in time, and smash up that beauty.

Thanks a lot. I knew as soon as I saw this one, I had to act. I emailed the owner the same day he posted it, took time off of work and drive 280 miles to get it. I refused to miss out on at least having a chance at it.

With the wider wheels and smaller steering wheel it's a bearcat to steer. I'd like to add seat belts, disc brakes up front, and power steering eventually. Just to make that much more enjoyable to drive.

Edited-just saw your addition. Yes I definitely want to do that ASAP. So you're saying add a brake booster to the existing drums?

Ha! That's awesome. Next month I'm going to take it to a meet up in Creswell called "cars and coffee". Let me know when you're here, maybe we can meet at the drive in restaurant in town or something.

It will be well worth your time to meet up with TBone. He's a friend of mine, and we have met up a couple of times. Great, down to earth guy, and an absolute artist at his craft (anything mechanical with trucks)

Nice truck! As far as upgrades go, from experience if on a budget i would suggest adding a power booster to the existing drums first. Then ps. You can always add discs as well. Another nice swap is to either add an overdrive to the existing trans or swap the rear to higher ratio. My dad had a 71 GMC with a 250 6 cyl 3 ott and 3.73 rear. I found a 3.07 posi on local c list for $100. You might have a harder time finding a six lug axle and just swap gears.

Any idea what the 72 went for? I would be willing to guess $8-$10k.

That's excellent! I'll seize the opportunity to pick his brain then I really want to enjoy this truck with my son, so the safer I make it the better I'll feel toting him around in it. Seat belts and power brakes are on the top of the list.

Great information, thank you. From what little I've read so far about adding a brake booster to the drums, it seems fairly straight forward. I'll look deeper into it.

Ya know, I wish I knew. I haven't talked to the guy since that day. He wouldn't mind if I called and asked him but he was going on a trip a few days after that and still isn't home. Since he ended the auction early, I wouldn't be surprised if someone offered him around 7k to end it.

Hey thanks Bruce. Once I clean the ol' girl up from the journey home I'll snap some better pics and get it going.
