Brush On Lizard Skin

Thinking I would like to cover most of the interior in Lizard Skin - Problem is, I'm not convinced that I want to spend $80 on top of the product for the applicator as I'm not 100% convinced that it will do what I want and therefore may not need the applicator again. Can Lizard skin be brushed on? Is there a similar product that can be brushed on?

Re: Brush On Lizard Skin

I haven't seen it brushed on. All we ever used to spray in on was a Schultz spray gun. They can be had for under $20 bucks and are used to apply undercoatings. Cheap and disposable if things go wrong.

Re: Brush On Lizard Skin

I would have to agree with HO. Application guns for that stuff are best if bought on the cheap and tossed afterwards. Try Harbor Freight or Northern Tool, etc. If it's all going to be hidden anyway, I can't see as brushing would really hurt anything, but I've never seen that done either. Maybe grab a big piece of scrap metal and try it to see how it goes first.

Re: Brush On Lizard Skin

Their site states you can roll it on.. I'd guess you'd use a small roller for the tight areas, and a big one for the larger areas.

Did you do one coat or several coats?

Re: Brush On Lizard Skin

I used the heat and the noise shields. Brushed on probably a couple of coats of each just to make sure of full coverage, you know, brush until it looks good and then do it again when it dries. Brushing isn't as sure as a nice spray.

If you do the inside of the doors just make sure you don't block off the water drains

Re: Brush On Lizard Skin

i have never used "Lizard Skin" but I did paint the whole exterior of my Jeep with Monstaliner. I was going to spray it as well and after I sprayed the primer my compressor died. the kit came with a roller and brushes. so I rolled the whole Jeep. it came out fantastic.

Re: Brush On Lizard Skin

The Lizard skin gun has a huge suction tube. A lot bigger than a typical schutz gun. I was told you can brush or roll it but got the sprayer and it worked well. It also has a 90 degree nozzle.

Can always clean it when done and sell it, if it is 80 bucks and you sell it for 55, it only cost you 25 to use it..

Re: Brush On Lizard Skin

I made my own lizard skin (search the net for "DIY lizard skin") out of rustoleum can paint and glass microspheres and brushed on two coats or so. Worked real nice. The trick is mixing the paint and sphere ratio so that you do not end up with a flakey mess. No big deal really, just mix in the spheres until the paint mix starts to get thick and gloppy then add some more paint until it brushes on nice like warm honey.

Re: Brush On Lizard Skin

Sick472, any more info on this? I've been researching the "homemade lizard skin" for a while, but most people seem to use the ceramic microspheres for heat rather than glass for noise. What was your source for the glass spheres, and did you notice a significant difference in noise levels?

Re: Brush On Lizard Skin

I called Dupont directly to inquire about how to buy them and to my surprise the person that I was connected to sent me two - 1 gallon samples of two different sizes. It was not my intention to ask for samples, but I wasn't going to turn them down. I never did find out how to buy them as the samples they gave me was all I needed. I may be using the term "glass" interchangeable with "ceramic". It's been too long since that portion of the build for me to remember it outright

I can't comment about the actual reduction in noise because the car was never driven prior to restoration, And I added poor-boy dynomat to the firewall and floors as well for extra insurance. The old car never made it to "quiet" status, but side pipes tend to have that counter effect.

Got a phone number to get a hold of them direct?

Re: Brush On Lizard Skin

OK, I'm eating more crow, that's twice today! Sorry if I caused any wasting of your all's time.

It was 3M not Dupont and I think I used the number from this web page...

https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/company-...94857497&rt=r3

The number from that page is copied below...

Call 800-367-8905 (7:30 AM - 5:00 PM Central)

Edit: I just told them I had some question about the glass bubbles and was directed from there.

Re: Brush On Lizard Skin

Thanks for the info. I'm all for cheaper solutions to expensive products, since most people say LS is ceramic or glass microspheres (dependent on heat or sound control) mixed into latex paint. I always wondered about enamel like Rustoleum, so it's good to hear that someone has done it successfully.

Re: Brush On Lizard Skin

I used this product on my truck, rolled it on. Can’t really say how it will perform yet because my build is ongoing. I rolled 4 coats.

Did you get 4 coats out of 1 gallon?
