seat track prep ?

What is the best way to clear up surface rust on our seat tracks ? I do not think they can be sand blasted because of the grease and bearings inside the track.
Can the exposed part of the inside of the track be painted ?
How to add more grease also ?

Re: seat track prep ?

I took my seat tracks apart and cleaned the with purple power....mine are galvanized so need need to paint....used white lithium grease when reassembling....
If yours are painted I'd take them apart to clean them up...paint and then regrease...

Re: seat track prep ?

It is a 67 bench seat and I think it has pressed in pins so it will not just come apart

Re: seat track prep ?

I sandblast all my tracks for my seat restorations. But I don’t take them apart. I have a system down now since I do so many. It’s time consuming, but I keep working on them until they start sliding like new again. Once I’m done sandblasting, I rinse them with water, to remove all the sand. And then immediately blow them dry with the air compressor. Once they are completely dry, they get repainted. Several days later I grease the rollers & bearings.

Re: seat track prep ?

Here is a set of 1970 GTO Bucket seat track that I worked on. I restored the entire seats, including the frames. But the tracks were totally seized by all the rust. I couldn’t even get them to budge, wailing on them with a mallet! But at last I got them back to sliding like new. Below is a video I made after they were completed.
