Re: AD wiring

So far it hasn't been too bad. I got it running for a few minutes earlier today and no smoke!

Couple problems though. Horn stays on without even the steering wheel on. I'm not sure where but I'm guessing a ground somewhere in the wire.

Next, headlights work but turn signals need some attention. Only passenger side works. And the turn signal switch is new.

Re: AD wiring

make sure you have a good ground. I remember I had issues as well with my turn signals b/c of a bad ground wire.

Re: AD wiring

Earlier I tested the hazards. They work fine. Could I still have a bad ground?

Re: AD wiring

Another vote for the Speedway Harness. Excellent instructions, good quality.
I am hesitant to buy anymore electronics off of ebay or amazon that are not through a reputable source. I have been burnt several times lately with generic replacement batteries and other electronic equipment off Amazon and EBAY . The Chinese love cloning these electronic components with inferior materials they then sell it to us Americans looking for the "best deal." In my case the stuff worked for a short amount of time- but then failed. Where ever you shop Buy from a reputable source.

When I did all my wiring I mocked everything up before hand and labeled all my wires with tape so when the final install happened I would just need to connect everything and wrap in loom.

Proceeded with the install and and got everything done & cleaned up and I had issues with my signals. I checked the ground and even tore everything out of the wire loom back to the fuse box thinking I must have split or maybe cut a wire.

Turns out one of the pins got pushed out in the GM 4 1/2" column connector. Once I fixed the pin and pushed it back together everything worked. Then I had to re-do all the loom and tape & mounting all over again.

So check your column connector. I didn't even clue in until that was the last spot and boy was I pissed after doing all that work. So take my advise

Re: AD wiring

I'll play with it some more. I checked the grounds at the lights and I don't have loom on yet because I was afraid I'd have to chase something lol.

EZ wasn't so bad. But for a first time wiring I wish the instructions had been a little more clear.

Re: AD wiring

signals,
lights ground to the rad support so make sure you have a ground wire from rad support to the frame and frame to battery. also, check the bulb socket ground because sometimes it looks good but there is a voltage drop across the socket to the light housing. I have also seen new bulbs with the little soldered terminal contacts not connected to the filaments properly, right outta the box that way.

Re: AD wiring

I'll add a ground from rad support to frame. Hazards work... and I swapped bulbs from one side to the other too while I was checking.

Re: AD wiring

I ended up with three ground straps total:
1. Motor frame Heavy 2 Ga cable.
2. Cab to frame 4 Ga.
3. rear Bed area to frame 6 Ga.

This will eliminate some of your turn signal, braking, headlight etc problems.

Re: AD wiring

Yep. Haven't added rear one yet but I also don't have rear lights yet lol. Just capped wires. I had plenty of 2 ga so that's what mine are.

Re: AD wiring

I have also had a NEW bulb with the little alignment studs stuck on in the wrong place, on the side of the bulb, so neither contact was in the right location. could also check the plastic insulator plate on top of the spring in the bulb socket, those have been found to be lined up wrong in the socket as well.
worst case scenario, do a power check on the wires in the socket and see if you have power. if so check at the plug in end of the signal switch, like neo says, sometimes a pin will push back in the connector. may be the sig switch as well if everything else checks fine.

Re: AD wiring

Haven't messed with the turn signal switch yet but I do have rear lights and brackets in the mail.

Something I realized after ordering, they don't have back up lights. I thought maybe I ordered the wrong ones but it looks like you have to have separate back up lights.

What have some of you guys used for back up lights?

Re: AD wiring

I have seen some guys use a couple of led back up lights (pretty bright, small and cheap) mounted at an angle behind the bumper. it shines down and back so it mostly illuminates the ground around the rear of the truck. not great for a long distance "look" if backing up a long driveway or something but they seem to work ok for short distance back up and especially in the city where it's never REALLY as dark anyway.
what did you order for new lights? got pics?
