Installing Fender Emblems - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm sure this has been covered before but this will be a refresher....

I ordered new fender emblems for the '72 GMC and they came with speed nuts. Since the fenders were already painted and installed on the truck I wasn't about to fight with the nuts, trying to screw them on the emblem studs behind the fender. I went to my local NAPA store and looked through the book for Tubular Nuts (Barrel Nuts) that would work. The first ones I found that were the right size were for a Chrysler and the NAPA part number was 665-1457. I told the parts man to go ahead and order them for me. They worked great and made easy work out of installing the emblems. The Tubular/Barrel Nuts were for 3/16" Stud Size, 7/32" Hole Size, with a Black Finish. I have included a picture for those who don't know what they look like. The picture also lists the manufacturers part numbers for GM & MoPar. The bold numbers are not the NAPA numbers. I jacked the pic off the internet.

Screw the nuts, just get some 3M two side emblem foam adhesive and install the emblem without nuts. The 3M stuff will hold for a long time and if needed, it can be removed with a heat gun.

At 60 bucks for the pair I'm not taking any chances on these baby's falling off. Plus I thought about that but it would make the emblems stick out away from the body too far for me....

I glued mine on, no rattle and less likely to fall off or get stolen.

Barrel nuts were widely used before the days of stick on mouldings and plates. As long as they are the right size they will not allow the emblem to be removed without access from the rear to squeeze the tabs with pliers.

Now that`s slick.Beats the tar out of unbolting the fender and jamming your arm up there to loosen those speednuts somewhere up there.

I have been driving my truck for years without fender emblems because I did not want to pull the inner fenders.

I decided last week that I can get one nut on so I added some silicone to the other side to hold them. I was planning on removing the inner fenders to get the second nut on for security. I am still going to remove the inner fenders just because I want to inspect under them.

So Doc, do these fit flush and hold tight? The reason for asking is I've read that they leave a gap between the emblem and fender. If they do fit flush "I'm on it like a seagull on a dead fish". And thanks for the part number

custom10nut: You can see how the fit is in the picture in post #1. That is one of the actual emblems I installed. These were aftermaket emblems so I'm not sure if they are made exactly like the originals or not. The only thing that sticks up is the small flange at the top of the tube nut. That is what keeps it from pushing all the way through the hole. The ones I used fit tight, in fact I had to clean the paint out of the holes in the sheet metal to be able to get them in....

If anyone has any problems with the install with these please post it in this thread...

I did this exact thing a little over a year ago. It works great. Nice tight fit too.

The part number is good. My store has them hanging on a display along with all sorts of other special nuts/screws/and fasteners.

yep, if not performing a 100% restoration, you can spare the holes and the chances of mislocating them..

good gouge on the inserts LockDoc but that type of tension hardware can loosen in time and you only get one shot with the drill unless using existing holes..

this stuff is only .045" thick.. it's called booger tape and I've used it to install placards in the wheel wells and underwing of aircraft per Boeing spec.. yep, it's tough enough to hold an emblem on yer pickup

I had to order mine. These worked out great! Fit in the fender holes, snapped in place and emblems are on tight and flush.

Plan to use on the

hood emblems too.
