Couple stupid AD questions?

Did the ADs have high and low beam? If so where was the switch located?

At first glance it looks like the hole in firewall is not centered with column recess in dash. obvious on a 1947-53 but less obvious on my 54 cab. I have ordered an Ididit column with swivel ball floor mount so I will be modifying my firewall to accommodate the new floor mount. Should I shift it over a couple inches?

My guess is that the dash recess was for the column shifter and the high beam switch was originally somewhere on the floor but not sure where. Ididit has a switch option for the column I could probably add but the floor switch might be nice brings back memories of the 80s

It is on the floor. Upper left of the toe board, by the e brake set pedal.

Re: Couple stupid AD questions?

My 54 has floor mounted dimmer switch..looks to be factory..the recess in the dash above steering column is for the column shift and the hole above steering column in firewall is where the shifter goes thru.

Re: Couple stupid AD questions?

54earl is correct about the location of the floor mounted hi-beam switch and you are correct about the dash recess under the gauges - it was for the column shifter linkage, not the column itself!

Dimmer switch goes here and comes up though the hole in the kick board

From the firewall side.

The empty hole where the switch goes.

Column in 51 1-1/2 ton that has never been molested but is off center a bit.

Column location with stock location steering .

Not knowing what has been done to your truck in the I can't offer any suggestions right now.

Re: Couple stupid AD questions?

Very cool thanks guys and 48 for the pics. I'm going to stick with the floor switch. I filled the hole already but it will be easy to open it up again. As for the steering column hole. I think I will move it toward the left about 2 inches (left if sitting in cab). I think that will center it better between the dash recess and provide a bit better clearance for steering shaft around headers....maybe

Re: Couple stupid AD questions?

If you want to run a switch on the floor get a switch for a 71 / 77 Chev or GMC Pickup. Actually that switch fits most GM vehicles that were built from the late 50's until they started having the switch on the column

Here is a link that should go to the AC Delco D808 dimmer switch on the O'Reilly web site. That part number = Delco D808 will cross at what ever parts house or online search you use. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...1970&ppt=C0039

You will have to figure where you want it and drill 2 holes to mount it with either sheet metal screws or machine screws with a nut on the outside.

Re: Couple stupid AD questions?

Here is a pic of the ac Delco switch. Looks like it bolts to the floor inside the cab with the plug and wires on the inside of cab?

Here is a pic of a stock 1947-54 repop. Fits the original hole and wires are on the engine side of floor.

Maybe I'm missing something here however the newer style plug would be nice

Re: Couple stupid AD questions?

If your floorboard has the hole for the dimmer then you need the 2nd switch..if you have no hole you can use the first. Or if you have the hole in floorboard you could make a patch panel to cover it and use the newer style and keep all your wiring inside the cab.which is what I would do.

Re: Couple stupid AD questions?

I had the same question as Flysocal - just found this thread and it's perfect. I'm going with the newer switch.

Thanks!
