What grit for sanding off clear coat?
I plan on removing the already peeling clear coat off of my truck and I was wondering what would be a good grit of sand paper to do the job.

no such thing ... if it will remove the clear then it will remove the base coat as well. your best bet is to sand it down and do a complete respray.

Your right. The funny thing about this site (which I have been a member of for 7 years) is any time I try to take a short cut on something, regardless of forum, someone is always there to correct me. I like that.

Thare are always different levels of "right"
Im the king of short cuts but if this is a important ride and you don't know how it was done before. Take it to bare metal and go from there. Which is real easy if you use "aircraft" stripper from autozone. litteraly in 3sec the paint will just fall off, no scrapin, scrubin, sandin, bare metal in the blink of an eye. And as such the stuff will burn the heck out of you if it gets on your skin. But once hit with water it stops the effects.

That stuff is great. I have used it before. I have also used it to remove carbon and oil on engine parts.

you do want to take the whole pannel to metal or u are just askn for trouble however u want to do it is up to u something went wrong with the process/material that was used

I wolud try to sand a panel with 220 grit and spray 2-3 coats of high build primer. Not all trucks need to be stripped to bare metal, some do some don't. If the truck is crazing or craking or lifting by all means strip and then epoxy prime. Jim

You can't tell w/o looking at it or a decent pic. but we sand with 80 grit . epoxy primer to suit and then B/C . as stated no reason to take to bare metal. Whats the sense in that?

Most feel that they have to strip. It is a lot of extra work and is uneeded in a lot of cases. Like I said in the above post if you don't have a cracking or frying of the paint stripping is a lot of work sometimes for nothing. Jim
